I was doing some research, going through back issues of Rod & Custom magazine when I came across this:

It's the Winter 1971 issue of R&C Quarterly. What a great cover, and what a great quartet of siginificant hot rods!

That's all, I just wanted to share.

Thanks for sharing. Those were probably $5000 cars back then, too. Who knew?

In case you don't know, the cars are (from back to front):

    The Doane Spencer '32 roadster

    Dick Craft's "Highland Plating Special"

    The Jim NieKamp roadster

and Bud Bryan's '29 highboy on Deuce rails.

Doane Spencer's '32 is an icon of sorts and set the bar for many '32 roadsters that came after.

The "Highland Plating Special" raced on dirt tracks before appearing on a 1962 cover of Hot Rod magazine.

The NieKamp roadster was the winner of the first AMBR in 1950 and exceed 140 mph on the lakes.

The build up of Bryan's '29 was chronicled in a series of articles in R&C and could be considered to be the genesis of today's popularity of "traditionaly" styled hot rods. At the time it was built, the most popular trend in street rodding was the "resto-rod".

Yea, and today the four would probably come close to being worth a half million total!

And the magazine was pretty good inside also. I had a 56 F-100 big window pickup and that was why I bought the issue. Still have the magazine but sadly the big window has been gone for many years.

  8. At least you kept your '32.
It is a great mag. I was surprised to find a Oz rod run featured when I bought my copy last year. That cover no doubt inspired more people to build traditional hot rods.

Moments ago I was reading the new R&C, good article about Bud with a lot of mention about the A roadster. Neat coincidence to stumble upon this

It is. I got my copy yesterday and I'm anxious to read that article.

That has always been one of my favorite cars. I got to see it in person at the L.A. Roadster show in '73.

Petersen successors should pull that highboy build and their 1950's articles on building A-V8's into a book...

Anyone have the 1968 RnC with the Bud Bryan roadster mocked up in the driveway?

We were just talking to the guy who's driveway the pic was taken in. I'd like to see the cover if anyone can scan and post it.

    Thanks,

    Neal

I may see the Bud Bryan A-V8 tomorrow at the Outriders Picnic if Jules brings it out, which he usually does. If so I'll shoot some pix.

That buildup and the related early Ford stuff going on in R&C at that time were very important influences in building up some early Ford consciousness and knowledge in a new generation, just as A-V8's book started a lot of balls rolling more recently.

I agree Bruce. My brother collected all of those back issues in the late 70's...and started gathering parts to build his own version of the RnC Av8. Now some 30 years later, he's finally getting somewhere on the build.

He copied all of the progress articles and but them together in a binder form. I have a copy and it is a neat reference.

I found the cover I was looking for...it was 1969.

That's my dad's friend Bob sitting the the car, and his brother Hugh with the torch. I learned some interesting history this weekend...
