Need a bit of help here please. First of all, I assume the old Green Line Gauges are 12 volt ? Second, if they are, what do I have to do to them to adapt to a 6 volt system that I am using in my '49 Ford Coupe ? I realize that the oil pressure is a tube direct to the engine. Tks Much..
You may need to power the gauges via a separate 12volt circuit. You can get a 6v to 12v DC-DC converter.
Any mechanical gauge won't care about voltage, same with an ammeter. It may be possible the 'fool' the 12V gauges into working on 6V but you'd need sending units with different ohm ranges which may not exist. The big fly in the ointment is neither the gauges or likely any convertor you find will like trying to run on a positive ground system.
Hey, Steve & hdb; Not sure on the gauges, somewhere I've read & been told, that gauges were actually 6V into the 80's. From what I remember using(adapting) some factory gauges from some ~late70's/80's gauges(into a 40's truck), they came from the factory w/an electronic Voltage drop. Really neat, & cheap to buy. & weren't most 6V -> ~'55 anyways, & pos grd 'till then, too? At least factory gauges. ??? Greenline I don't know about. There's a few guys on here that have them & could maybe check the printing on, or in if any are apart for the V-stamping? Tim in the NW area that did the smoooth T-bucket had a good set - he might know? Marcus...
