A hole in anything that, as a result, leaks major amounts of oil, always makes a good story years later.

You're just building up your library of good beer drinking stories.

    Always look at the positive!

  2. I did the same thing last Fall with a 58 Chevy P case. On mine, the carrier cap broke, the carrier whanged around in there lunching the ring and pinion and knocking a hole in the case like yours. When I rebuilt it, I imade up some bafffles for the axle housing which will help keep lube in and around the 3rd member rather than out at the ends of the axles. The diff is in a road race car.

My 1980 Pinto and I were at the track one weekend when my dad was out of town, so being the young punk I was I dropped the exhaust at the shop and drove it to the track about thirty minutes away. I had made a couple passes and always fought the tune on the carburator, I had an old guy (I was 17 at the time) come over and he was telling me how to adjust the carb in (it was obvious I was not a mechanic), so we got it all tuned up and I got in line. Did my burn out, Staged got the rev's up to 2800 and launched!! Holy Shit! that thing launched like I had never felt in my life! Before I knew it the tach read 5500 and I popped it into second gear.
All of a sudden it sounded like Billy Bob shot his 30-06 from inside the car! The pin that holds the spider gears in place had twisted clean apart!

Needless to say I thanked the old guy for helping me fix the carb tune and he offered his trailer and truck to get the car back to the shop!

BTW, 1980 Pinto, Moser built 9" w/3.90:1 posi, 351w dart heads 1.6 rockers, pussy cam and not much of a converter. best I ever ran was a 13.20 @107 and change. If it hadn't granaded the rear I was working on a 13 flat.

I did exactly the same thing to my '59 Chevy Impala 4.11:1 rear end when practicing a burn out in front of my house. The shrapnel hole looked about the same size and shape as that one. After I pulled the rear end, it gave me the opportunity to install a third member with a lower gear. I installed rebuilt third member from a '64 Chevy (no difference) with a new set of 4.56:1 gears. That rear end lasted for another five years of hard drag racing using a factory 1965 327 CI-365 HP FI Chevy short block in my '59 Impala with "520" Power Pack heads with larger valves and ported by Joe Mondello. I was racing in AHRA F1-E/HR class. F1= multiple carbs. (2-4 barrel AFB) .

  6. Now, that's a trophy

I manufacture and collect mangled parts......
    my best one:
late 1963 427 Ford crank/block/pistons/rods in my boat

I think it broke a cam and dropped a piece into the reciprocating assembly at about 5500 rpm but the engine was so torn up, hard to tell what caused it.

Don't throw that old unit out!!!!!!!!!

I read on a thread here on the HAMB that that third member can be fixed with dryer sheets.

  12. That is too friggin' cool! I've never seen a pumpkin blown like that! That is a keeper for the "wall o'broken shit" to show your friends! Glad to see it did not cause a wreck or anything like that! Spectacular destruction of parts is always a neat thing to see...as long as it isn't my parts!!!

    Yep, it's broken.:D

But why is it us gearheads are always so proud of the carnage that we often created??

Heck I still have two hurt pistons and a broken piece of an axle laying in my tool box that were from my brief circle track career. And that was 25 years ago!!!

You should see the Doctor's Parking Garage. Today I parked my 31 coupe between a Toyota Prius (on the left) and a Ferrari 430 Spyder (on the right). The Prius driver is a dweeb, duh. The guy who owns the Ferrari was complaining the other day that his mandatory oil change cost him $1800. When I presented him with the list of vintage speed parts I could buy with that coin, he just looked at me and made some comment that sounded like Mike Myers doing the "Sprockets" routine from SNL. So I got up and and left him in mid sentence.

I killed two of these! not like that though! Was doing a burn out with to really fat friends in the back seat and spun the spider gears out of it! took the axles out and this really nice "silver paint" came out of the tubes. Good job doc.

Ouch, racing will do that. I blew the pinion gear right out of my 57 Olds rear a few years ago at the track. Left a big hole in the pumpkin and also bent a brand new chrome moly drive shaft. I did at least get a laugh when the track crew pushed me off the starting line and one of them tripped over the pinion gear.

Yup, I cracked a non-Hamb friendly rear diff once. Somehow sheared a ring gear bolt and sucked it up into the pinion. Ker-POW! Dad reminded me that a Lincoln is not meant to be drag raced, I just offered him a drink....

  21. I blew a hole in the housing in my 61 pontiac, a canadian model they run the chevy rear end

  26. Lucky it didn't lock up. Only ever killed one rear end, custom built ad supposed to handle over 2000hp.
I managed 3 ft of movement in a factory driveway before gear parts exited through the sheet housing. 2000hp my ass! We were lucky to be punching above 1800hp!
They made me a new one and sent it over free of charge though.
    Doc.

  27. Yep, I found some bent pushrods from my old Duster the other day:)

I grew up in East County. Graduated from Santana High School and went to Grossmont College and then took classes at SDSU - but that was a lifetime ago...
