Hey guy's I did a search and could find anything on the subject. I know it's here somewhere but "I" came up blank. I have a 34 Ford grille that I want to chrome the outside ring and powder coat the bars red. Just wondering what is the process? Do I have it chromed first then powder coated? Powder coat the grille bars first then have it chromed? I was thinking chrome first but was worried about the chrome changing color during the curing of the powder coat. Then I read that powder coat doesn't like to stick to chrome. I'm sure it's been done. Anyone have any insight? Thanks

  3. I would think you would Chrome the grill first and explain to the plater what you intend to do,I doubt the powder coating would hold up in the acid Baths that they use in the chrome process.

The plater can avoid chrome on the outside surface. HRP

Thanks for the replies guy's. Was looking for something more durable than paint. Thanks HPR, that's kinda what I figured just wanted some backup. Just didn't know if chrome could handle the heat associated with the powder coating process is all.

Paint will work, but that'll be a lot of red up front. From one 34 guy to another; reconsider and keep the bars chrome. I think it will make for a much better looking grille on a 34.
That's just my opinion though as I've always thought chrome parts such as grilles, bumpers, etc., should be chromed and aluminum engine parts should be left raw or polished, not painted.

I can't afford to have the grille bars chromed. The outside ring will be about $500 to $600 but having the bars all done (the hard part) would be almost $2000. Next best thing is the red center to match the wheels.

These are the wheels I'll be matching. The rest of the car is going to be satin black.

Properly done chroming should handle relatively high temperatures, ie flame temperatures, powder coating I think is done at moderately low temperatures. - for what it is worth.

Why not paint the grille bars dull aluminum? Different enough you wont look like you are faking chrome but still will give the overall silvery front end look like Hot Rods Ta Hell said.

I've seen a couple of black 33/34 sedans with the red grilles and to be honest; I like the look. Don't get me wrong I wold love to have an all chrome grille but until the funds become available it will have to do. Mad 034 I will give it some thought. Could even do a chrome powder coat for better durability.
