Exactly. I use Walter flap wheels. My local welding shop likes my work and cuts me a pretty good deal. I have had them outlast every other brand I have tried, and I have tried a lot. You can run 'em all the way down to the plastic backer, and I often do. I have had good luck with Klingspore ones too, just can't buy 'em locally. NOTHING at a regular retail store is worth a damn, in my opinion.
Best ones I ever found were at a garage sale. They were 2-3 times thicker than a regular one and lasted forever. Best part, I bought a few boxes at $5 for boxes of 10. I tried looking up the name to see if I could find a supplier, never could find a source. Figures, best ones I found, and cant get more
This is a good place to post a reminder. Abrasives have a shelf life. They don't last forever since the boding agents get old and brittle with time. I won't buy salvage type stuff from swap meet and flea market vendors for that reason. You can notice this by trying an old vs new grinding disc. The old goes away real fast. The safety issue is in "hard" discs. An exploding cutoff wheel or hard disc will **** up a layer of skin faster than you can ***** about it. How long are they good for? I don't know, but you can tell by how easy it 'cracks' when bent how old it is. Unless you get them for a penny each it's $$$$ down the drain.
