I think we're racing somewhere between here and vegas, ready or not..

OK, 'Special Interest Auto' did a drive comparision between a '52 V8 Crestline and a '52 Inline 6 Mainline. Both 3 spd manual and 4.10 axle. Results were...

0-60: V8 17 sec.; I6 15 sec.
1/4 mi: V8 22 sec @ 72 mph; I6 21 sec @ 73 mph
Top Speed: V8 90 mph; I6 90 mph

Looks like the liner has it by a nose!

Coupla thngs: That was a standard run off on the streets when I was in HS.

Now, a stock Merc is 255 and not 249. A stock Ford flat is 239. So WTF do you really have?

In stock form the 215 will be off the line faster since it makes all its torque at lower revs than the flatty. Assuming equal rear ratios. The 6 was often the preferred engine in farm trucks and low speed deliverys/pickups.

I sort of doubt that SI report. I still have my hand written slips from 57 when I ran a bone stock (except for Fenton headers, glasspacks and a Y Block 94 carb) 49 Ford V8. 17.9 sec 75.1 mph was the best and I never got beat by any I6 under a 235. Not an OD so probably a 3.78 rear. Then I tore it apart and built a 286.

Get the dual 94's tuned properly, if they bog you lose. Do some stopwatch timing before the race to dial it in as close as you can. Hope your buddy runs the 3 carbs on the I6, way too much and it will slow him down.

Stock Specs:
49-51 V8 100hp@3600, 180FP@2000
52-53 I6 101hp@3500, 185FP@1300

The 52-3 V8 picked up 10hp and 16FP just by going to EAB heads and a slightly longer cam.

im going with the 6 my 6 ran harder than my dads eight but of course both were stock and his ran like shit. could go either way but both motors i would die for.

 

Its all come down to this weekend during the Ratfink show at LACR in Palmdale.
