Holy shit, these are BEFORE pictures? Damn, it took some guts to take that beautiful car apart! You are doing GREAT work. It never ceases to amaze me what you Europeans are able to accomplish with limited resources; us lazy Americans are sometimes hacks compared to you guys. A four inch grinder and a flap wheel, huh? I almost expected you to say all you had to work with was a hack saw and files! I can only imagine what you could do if you had a fully equipped shop at your disposal.

P.S. I used to be a signmaker, nearly 20 years ago. It didn't pay shit over here back then; maybe I should look into it again?

 

Excellent step by step shots on all the fab work. Showing how it should be done.
A question though.. Why did you weld the spring leaves together? Do you think that will be ok? I always thought welding on springs was a no-no.

it certainly is a no no! the welded spring is only for mock up, the main leaf had snapped so i just cut the ends off, flipped the eyes over and welded it to the next leaf. it'll have a new spring for the final assembly.

and richard, being a sign maker here and now isn't much better! i don't exactly earn a fantastic wage but i do enjoy the job so its all good

the before shots look good but believe me when i say it was a VERY badly built car. lots of nice old parts but it looked like it had been assembled by a chimp.

 

Neil,just had another look at your pedal assembly,great job,might do something similar on mine if you don't mind.Are there any bushes between the inner and outer pedal shaft?Are they needed?

The pedals and mounts are insane! Keep it up.

 

I wouldn't have thought pedals would really need bushes given the very limited range of movement. A lot of pedal boxes on Citroens have the pedals rotate on an M9 thread - even after 35 years of use there is never any wear in them.

bushings wouldnt be a bad idea but the pedals rotating on a m9 thread sounds like something that came outa the eastern bloc

I was just looking at this again and remembering what I was doing 16 years ago when I was 26. I was a signmaker, and drank a lot of beer....that's about where the similarity ends. I will still probably never catch up to your skills, just amazing.

encswsm, nah i''m not a fan of boxed frames on traditional cars, maybe if it had a bigger, more powerful motor i'd consider it but the 283 isn't exactly huge.

the shafts aren't bushed but the they are made out of solid EN24 so they aren't going to wear out in a hurry. i'll also pop a grease nipple on each pedal. there is a nylon washer between each rotating piece though to keep things nice and smooth.

 

FANTASTIC, are you gonna bring your ''A'' over to the Hot Rod Hayride this year, as I'd love to see it in person!

Ok, probably a dumb question due to the fact that the finished weld has more to do with the skill of the person welding, but what sort of welder are you using for those freddy fantastic looking welds??!!!
