  3. lets be honest, drilling shit full of holes is cooler than not drilling shit full of holes.

this piece might look a tad heavy duty just to hinge the trunk from, but it'll also serve as a mount for the back rest of the seat and probably part of the mounting for the gas tank.

And it all started because of a busted differential

Fantastic work man, can wait to see more progress!!!!!

  12. the amount of cutting compound i use is nothing compared to how many of these suckers i munch through!

pretty much finished the hinges tonight, i'm so stoked on how well they work because working out the geometry for them was a bit of a ball ache. i know that the heims aren't strictly traditional but you won't be able to see them when its finished and they are sooooo smooth! :)

by the way nick, jamie says hello from guernsey! haha :)

love the trunk hinges. the more holes the better. How many hours would you say?

  16. i wouldn't like to count the hours mcknight! they took as long as they took :)

i've been beating myself up about what kind of steering to put in this car for months and months but i've finally let my brother bully me into probably the most involved, but i think coolest option. cowl steering.

my good friend jamie (owner of a badass blown and chopped '34 coupe) sourced me a fully reconditioned steering box which was perfect for the job.

i need to extend the shaft and make my own pitman arm so i chopped the big end off the stock pitman arm and plonked it in my little lathe and ended up with this splined bung-

you can also see the steel tube that i'm using to extend it has been squared off and skimmed out on the lathe, then i ground a bevel to get good weld penetration. i also drilled some holes in the sides and loaded them up with weld for good measure. i put it back in the lathe to ensure everything was true before i tacked it.

here it is after finish welding and turning smooth. turned out pretty good to say i've never made anything like this before!

a 33mm socket was spun down on a bigger, more manly lathe than mine by a friend to slip inside the tube to crank the nut up.

straight as a straight thing :)

more tomorrow hopefully, i need to start planning a frame to mount the box to, i'm sure as shit not mounting it to the sheet metal like i've seen on some cars!

Once again Neil I'm enjoying you thought process, turning down the socket was a good answer to a need. What steering box did the Guernsey nut n bolt man get you?

  18. great to see, clever build with both form and function, all done with simple tools and a single shed.

Quick question, how well does your seat fit now with those trunk hinges?

    Cheers,

    Drewfus

  19. you'll have to guess steve! its from a british commercial vehicle though, thats you're only clue.

thanks drewfus, the seat fits just fine as i took that into consideration when making the hinges :) i'll be making a new bench seat anyway as it happens.

got my mate eggy to put a 2'' wiggle in this seeing as i don't have a torch in my shed.

mocked up with steering wheel i'll be using, anyone guess what it is?

  21. Your cowl steering set up is stout! Every thing about this build is first class.

Went round to see Neil and to think I nearly threw that brand new Steering Box away and now look what Neil has done with it, great work Neil, you should put a picture up of what you looked like after 10 hours grinding and welding!

Its all looking good Neil, look forward to seeing more.

  25. Great work for sure, love that theres no milling involved, just raw talent and time.
Steering box looks alot like a landrover box but does'nt have the same 4 bolt plate at the base of it.
    Slitting disc's rule!
