On the set of 'Magnum P.I. - The Low Rent Years'?

    Year 1980 or '81?

'The Bros' have 'stovepipe' pants, not 'wigwams'.

The Hash was probably poor quality but 'funky' back then. Hence, the topless chick fancied her chances. Why, did you think Ted Nugent was sooooooooo popular?

i assumed the cali guys would figure out the venue! the year is 1981, according to the guy that took the pics. but, what kind of event in 1981 would you find a clean merc custom alongside vans, 4x4s and trans ams?

ding-ding-ding! 1981 street machine nationals west!

here's the link to the flickr pool http://www.flickr.com/photos/7552532@N07/sets/72157607106942447/

this guy has some great stuff!

last week one of the merc guys was talking about how the eighties sucked, but this illustrates how much variety we had then and how 'exclusive' most big shows have become. :(

I loved the 80's, car guys didn't all have labels, they were just car guys.

yup, same thing. they did drop the 'car craft' part after the world's worst promotion company took over the events...

    81 National West? where?

seems to me I went to a Car Craft Street Machine Nationals in Sacramento. got the sticker on my toolbox to prove it. and a license plate frame, and I bet I still even have the T-shirt somewhere.

Same here, but I don't remember seeing you there.
And yes...my outfit looked pretty much like those dudes.

Sure is a great example of "timeless styling" on that Merc, tho eh?

Yeah, that was back before Big Gulps, super size fries, and king size candy bars. Back when a large Coke was 16oz.

I was going to the LA roadster show in the lat 70's and the swap was inside the fairgrounds but not where this car is parked. Even then there wasn't anything but roadsters allowed inside. None of the cars that are in these pictures would have been inside.

This show looks like more of a street rod / late model custom car type show.
