anyone know a source for the guide or that style headlight rings? thanks brandon

  2. This is a damn good question. I was told that 39 Chevy rings work from Chevs of the 40s - They claim that their source does not make them any more.

I used a headlight ring from a 1950 Harley Davidson FL. You can buy a new repop at the Dealer for a twenty or so....

  5. Do you have a good part number? I had a HD part number and it was closer to $60.00 each. But then the dealer I checked is...ummm....a little hard to deal with!!

I do know the one ring off my Guides fit a buddy's '39 Chevy bucket. It does not have any for his either so we are looking for several.

I used a headlite retainer ring off my '41 chevy truck for my BLCs I got from General Gow.

Jim Carter chevy truck parts has them for $9.50 ea

They have the outer ring also for $25.00 ea

    hope that helps.

So it is the LG101 41-46 Chrome outer ring? These will fit a Guide 682 for sure?

    Thanks,

I cannot say "for sure". All I know is I didn't have the inner ring for my BLCs (I don't remember offhand what #), and I pulled the ones out of my '41 chevy truck and they worked. I already had the outer rings.

But- I can put the two together and compare them and see how close they are later this evening if you would like.

That would be great. I want to run chrome rings, so if these repops will work, I just might go that direction.

I have an ***ortment of extra rings when I was trying to find one for my 39 International. Send me a picture with measurements and I will check my stash.

I also have a pair of guides that I don't need. I will make someone a heck of a deal.

Ok. I compared the two rings. The ones that came on my BLCs have the molded ring with the unrolled edge at the light, and clamp together at the bottom with a lateral screw. The ones on my '41 have a rolled edge at the lite, are unsplit, and mount with a tab at the top and transverse screw at the bottom. The '41 ring seems to have a slightly bigger diameter also.

That said, I almost bet that someone could make the chevy ring work.

There are at least 2 styles of H/l rings One has a tab that fits in the slot in H/L body and uses a screw at the bottom to hold it on. This style also uses a rubber gasket to keep out water.

The other style has this groove and uses a pinch bolt/screw at the bottom to hold it on. Check to see which one you need before you order.

PS any H/L that came from the factory with a sealed beam like the Guide was made in the 40s. 39 Ford used a bulb...40 Ford was the first Ford to use the sealed beam H/L.

so the outer chrome beauty rings come from a 41 chevy
and the retainer rings come from a 41 chevy
    so its all 41 chevy.
hmmmm....... i think i'm getting it.
    you guys are so crazy.

I bought a set of rings from J&P Cycle (#3100358 - 7" outer ring) @23.99 ea in July of '04. They are absolutely identical to the originals I have on my 682C's except for the tightening screw at the bottom - one's phillips, one's not. I was totally stunned that they were so close!

If your bucket has the grove all the way around like this one then it takes the ring with the pinch bolt at the bottom like the Harley ring. I've never tried a Harley but more than one has said they work.

This is the Harley ring the bottom pinch bolt pulls the ring together locking it into the groove in the bucket.

If your bucket has this slot and no groove, then you need a different ring that is available from a Chevy 1940s reproduction parts house. They are for a 40s era Chevy trucks. This style uses a rubber water seal that is held in place with wire clips. Both are available from a Chevy repro dealer. I bought mine from a dealer at a flea market so I don't remember their exact name.

This is the inside of the Chevy ring with the gasket. Please excuse the Latimer Valley mud that got behind the ring. The gasket kept it out of the bucket. The tab on this style ring fits into the slot on the top of the bucket and a single screw through the ring into the bucket on the bottom locks it on.

Pinch bolt style bucket (their are probably other shapes too?)

tab and slot Chevy style. Notice that this style is flatter when viewed from the side. The pinch bolt style seems to round over more to my eye.

I hope you get the right one the first time.

  23. I wonder if the JP Cycles part number was updated because it does not match the part number listed does not match the one you purchased in 2004. JP is close I may order a set just to see. Then maybe I can add some value to this thread.

  24. Cool, thanks guys. That helps. I think I will try and order a set of the Harley rings and I will let you know what happens!??!!

Tommy- Do you have a source for the inner rings, like the ones on the blue headlight?

I'm pretty sure the sealed beam retaining ring (inner ring) is generic. I just checked that ring from my 56 Ford and it looks like it will work. The tabs may need some slight t******* to fit under the chrome ring, but the depth measures the same which makes sense since all those rings need to be the same depth for those sealed beams. Even if the tabs won't "clock" with your existing screws, you can drill new holes where they need to be.

I don't know if they are repopped but I'd steal some from a 40-57 headlight ***embly or any single sealed beam ***embly.

I ordered a pair from J & P last Friday, got them today. They are indeed identical to the 682 rings. They are made in Taiwan, but are nice pieces. I did have to file a corner by the clamp screw to get one ot the rings to fit. They also sent 10-24 screws and the holes were tapped 8-32. Not a big deal, but I am glad I checked before forcing the screw.

Over all, I am very happy with these trim rings. $50 well spent.
