The CA vehicle code states that you are to run with front plates, but I do not and have never had a problem. I do carry it with me along with a wrench and the nuts/bolts to put it on if questioned.
Back in the 60's we were always stopped by the police for every little thing, but back then there were no rodders over 35 and all the cops were older.
    Now its reversed.
Now if you are going to drive like or act like a jerk, then you have a problem.
And, yes, I have YOM plates on the '34. It identifys the year of the car for the curious and adds a nice change from the "modern" plates...and I like the sunflower yellow with black numbers much better.

No problem in WV either. You just have to make a good color photocopy to send in with your paperwork.

I have been running YOM plates on my 34 for many years. Driven coast to coast and north & south. I have had state troopers on my *** without warning and never a problem about plates. In many years and miles I have only snagged one speeding ticket and that was leaving a small town in Wyoming on the last leg of a 4000 mile road trip. After chewing me out he wanted to talk street rods. I just wanted to go.

  6. Colorado is the same, I carry "regular" plates in the trunk along with the approval for the YOM plate. Not only have I never been stopped because of it, the one time I was stopped the officer never even ask about the "regular" plates.

As said above about running the YOM numbers through their puter while pulled over, I had a Ohio State trooper tell me that they cannot get info by running just the YOM numbers in their system. Thats why they tell you to keep your Historical Vehicle plates in the car with registration.

Here in Michigan YOM plates can be registered to the car - I run them on about 8 cars and bikes I own. Why ? 1) It is a one time fee - no renewal and 2) don't have to pay the uninsured motorist fee with my insurance --- so is a LOT cheaper ! I have never been h***led - but supposedly is only for going to shows - but there ia always a show somewhere......:D:D

Never even been pulled over in my vehicles with YOM plates, whether I've been in-state or driving out-of-state with them. I've got them on the '66 and the '37, and am going to run them on the '56 and my wife's '78.

Problem with Oklahoma's YOM program is:
    1) You have to pay annually to run the YOM plates ($22.00 fee).
    2) You have to maintain a regular annual registration (another $22.00)
    3) You have to keep the regular tag in the car.
    4) So, you pay $44.00 per year to run the YOM tag.

But, at least Oklahoma doesn't have an annual inspection, so we don't have to jack with that nonsense. All that was in this state was a revenue generator, anyway, and had nothing to do with safety.

BTW, "YOM" means "Year of Manufacture", NOT "make".

Not if they know the program guidelines.
What you are proposing is fraud.
Why would you open yourself up to having the plates confi****ed and having to explain the mess you created to a PO that knows the law?
It's called the YOM program for a reason.
You need a PAIR (unless it's a M/C or Commercial Vehicle) of plates for the Year of Manufacture of the vehicle they are going on.
With the Yellow '56-'62 CA plates (since that's what I have) you need a year sticker for the year of the vehicle.
Once you register those, they are transferable to another vehicle of the SAME year.
The YOM program is set up with SPECIFIC guidelines to follow. Why not go the easy/legal route and follow them?

Now to answer the post ***le,
No,I've never had a problem. I've had mine on since early '08 and have not been pulled over yet.
I keep the Month/Year tabs inside the car. I only have room to run them on the bottom of the plate and they hang down too low.

I have been asked if someone can put them('56-'62 plates) on an '08 car .

I have beed running 1959 plates on my 52 olds for 5 years and never had a problem. i illinois you can have SHOW plates or YOM plates so thats my loop hole. I hate seeing YOM plates on cars that don't look stock and new. Like seeing a 32 all hoped up 60's syle but with YOM plates they just don't look right.

For those of you in Texas - how do you go about registering with just YOM plates? My local DMV is clueless, I have no ***le and don't know how to go about the registration process....

The first thing you need to do is legally own the vehicle. If you have no ***le for it, having a YOM plate does nothing for you. I'm confused how you are trying to ***ociate the two.

All registering the plate does for you is allow you to run something other than the standard issued state plates. Think of it as getting permission to run a personalized plate that is 50 years old, instead of a new one. You still have to legaly own the vehicle, and have a ***le for it to do this. This has nothing to do with ***ling a vehicle, and will in no way help you obtain a legal ***le.

I'm with Mazooma1 I just like the look, keep Year and Month in the trunk...For you California guys I'll tell ya about 1946 since I have one of those also..after several run arounds with Sacramento and local DMV, neither of which knew the law, there is no such thing as 1946 California car license plate, because of metal shortage right after the war, they only issued tags like the yellow one you see here, which is mounted on a 1945 plate, just as they were then, also they only made one plate for the rear in 1945 metal shortage again, so you do not have to run a front plate on a '46 as they didn't make one in '45 or '46............Oh I keep the year and the month tucked up behind the plate in case ...just need a 7/16 wrench to loosen and turn down....no h***les yet!

In Ny, you can run YOM plates as long as that number isn't being used.In NJ,they just p***ed a law where you can run any plate you want in the front just as long you have the DMV issued historical plate in the rear.

I think what attracts the law is the lack of registration sticker, that and the lack of freezing rain, they would have to stand in to find out.

Been running yom's for 9 year in NY. Its a historic registration (vehicles over 25 years old) Using the YOM plate. You need to do a special application which includes pictures of the plate or plates. Dmv checks to see if the number is OK and the plates not reported stolen, and issues the registration with that number.

Only h***le is once in a while, younger constables have pulled me over due to lack of a front plate (NY currently issues 2 and its a violation to not thave the front one or have it be obscured) in 46 and several other years they only issued 1. A reminder to review their cheat seet, shows them what years single plates were issued. usually get an apology for the delay and go on my way. Same thing happened with my single rear stop light, till I rewired.

In Colorado you register the vehicle normally and then bring in the YOM plate and a form for approval and it's granted for use. Keep the normal plates and registration in the vehicle along with the papaerwork for YOM and run the YOM plates. As a Cop I will say I have not stopped a Hot Rod in eighteen years for any violation. That is not to say if one gave me reason I wouldn't. Perhaps I am too busy admiring the Rods to notice any violations.

I don't have front plates on either of my hot rods.

As a matter of fact- I got pulled over today by CHP on freeway on way back from Del Mar show & was cited for a broken headlight (from a rock on the way down)
He walked all around my car & never said a word about no front plate.

I don't think you can "register" with "just YOM plates." First you have to get a ***le to the car to prove that you own the vehicle. You have to go to the county tax office in Texas to apply for a ***le transfer. If it's an ***embled vehicle there are a bunch more regs and hoops that you have to jump through. Once you get a ***le, tell the clerk that you want to register your YOM plates. She will give you an Antique Vehicle plate and send you to the TexDOT office in your area where you will have to show them your YOM plates and your nice fresh Texas ***le (or application receipt). They approve your plates at the TexDOT office. Don't give up. If you get a clerk in a bad mood, leave and come back another day and get a different one. No kidd'n. I had to keep this routine up several times until I got the county tax supervisor on a good day to register my Model A Tudor that hadn't been licensed in 50 years.

In Nebraska we can use Historical or Vintage plates. Only one Vintage plate (the same year as the vehicle) is required. It must be sent in to our state capital and checked out. It returns with a reflective Historical sticker on it. It must be mounted in the rear of the vehicle. So far no problems but.....I keep a copy of the historical license plate application along with my registration. I have all the important facts highlighted just in case a zealous officer pulls me over for not having a front plate. At age 50, the officers don't usually look twice. Just one benefit of grey hair.

  25. I have been running YOM plates on my 1955 Safari since I got it in 1994.The ONLY time I have been stopped for them is in IOWA! Of course doing 75 mph in a 55 zone may have had something to do with it.However the only thing he checked was my vehicle registration and whether the plates were valid.I told him(politely)what the Michigan law was regarding them and that I was there for a show(I was)and he was satisfied. He told me I might want to get my speedometer checked for accuracy when I got back home and left without giving me a ticket. So thanks to that Iowa State Trooper wherever he is.
BTW I have logged over 165,000 miles on the car with those plates and that was the only time I was ever questioned about them.

I had them on my '35 pickup here in Ohio, was stopped twice for them, showed them my registration and was sent on my way. One cop said he just stopped me to get a close look at the truck!

  27. as said in other posts, in california you have the yom. '63 plates are going to be in the yom program as of july this year. so 6 outta 7 cars/trucks have them (my girls '61 bel air had the '63 plates already registered to it). personally i would rather have a newer plate on then the yom......meaning like a '51 plate on my '36.

  28. Like everything related to ***les and registrations, no two states have the same rules, and you may not even get two identical answers in the same state from different DMV offices.

In NC you can run em on vehicle 35 years old or more, carry your regular plate in the car.I got em on 3 cars, one is a 78 which is not that old but never been stopped so far.

  30. Ragtop,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you have to be talking about (antique) plates nd not "Cl***ic) plates. In Texas, with "Cl***ic) plates, you MUST have current inspection & registration. However, the inspection is based upon the requirements for the actual YOM. With antique, no inspection is required I don't think, but with calssic it definetely is. You were lucky my friend.
