I'm in Texas and have YOM plates on both my '59 hotrod and my '65 panhead. One is a 'classic' registration and the other an 'antique' registration (meaning one has to be inspected, the other doesn't as it is supposed to only be driven to/from shows).

I've never been hassled at all with either. And I drive them both quite a bit.

In Oklahoma they are called vintage plates. Not sure if they have to be YOM or not, (mine is) but I doubt if it has to be. Tehy charge you like a vanity plate but give you a w/s decal for vintage plate use.

here in kansas it's registered as an antique. haven't been harrassed by cops other than speeding. no problems whatsoever.

  6. Probably one of the few things the California DMV does right-YOM plates, currently through 1962, can be registered to a car of the same year as the plates. Starting July one this year 1963 through 1969 (california "Black" plates) can also be registered to a car manufactured during those years. There are, per the information I've gotten, some requirements for a California DMV sticker indicating the same year of the car needing to be on the plate for registration. The earlier Ca. plates had the year embossed as the numbers, etc. were. I'll be trying this with my Goat in July.

One of our guys just got busted for this in the town of Millersville, a well known 'Speed Trap". They like to sit on 'their' two mile stretch of I-65 and rake in the $$$. My friend had just left my place and was headed to an upholstery shop in Millersville to check on the seat in his truck when he got ticketed.

The Tennessee law reads that to run antique or YOM tags a vehicle:

    ·
Must be a motor vehicle over twenty-five (25) years old,

    ·
Must have a non-modified engine and body,

    ·
Can be used for participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar uses as a collector’s item,
    and

    · Can only be used for general transportation on Saturday and Sunday.

The law used to state that the cars could be driven 'as necessary for maintenance' but I guess that excuse got used too many times.

I'd say running antique or YOM tags on a 'hot rod' here in Tennessee isn't quite legal, and not worth the hassle in my eyes.

I've had problems with the registration here in CA up until recently. Have had YOM on my 56. They were on the car when I purchased. They are considered personalized plates. When I bought the car the month was on the plate..short sticker. the year was(with several years) on the indented location. I've had to go in twice to get the new registration...finally they demanded that I have the tags added above the plate and to take off the stickers on the actual plates..that being said..I've had no problems... go figure!

Never really had a hassle in the '58 or '32. Did have one of Lansing's finest pull along side of me at a light on the way to lunch and inquire. Asked what the deal was running a '73 tag on my wife's Vette. I told him about YOM tags and he was on his way. However he could have hassled me that day because I drove to work and that's kind of a no-no. :D
I recommend YOM or Antique or whatever your state allows. In MI, it gets you reduced castostphic claims charges on your insurance (if you go with a specialty ins. co.) and you only pay one time for life with the YOM & 5 or 10 year tags with antiques.

I have been told by a DMV person here in WI that you can't run YOM. I am not on the road with my A coupe (or even close), but I thought I would just register the plate's ID as personalized and just mount it, rather than the modern day one.

Anyone think that would be an issue? I would think they wouldn't much care around here....

I have driven my 46 coupe with NY YOM plate in , NY, VT, PA, CT, MA, MD, VA, NC, Canada, and Michigan. Only place I have been stopped is in NY.

Question on the Texas Minnesota deal?? Had you changed your residence to Texas and not chnged your rgistration/Titles or were you visiting?? I have never heard of one state writing a violoation on another states laws. Currently, my daughter is on an extended visit from floida with here vehicle. Fla has no front plate, no inspection, no windshied stickers. NY can't write her a ticket for uninspected vehicle if her home state doesn't require one. Can't write a no front plate summons if Fl doesn't require one. Now if she decides to stay she will need to register and title her car here and bring it into complience inspection stuff.

as an IA cop I would pull you over to chat about the ride (I am a HAMBER) and then tell you to get on your way, but in legal instances, I can't see how it is legal unless the plate is registered to you. Meaning if I run that plate through my NCIC computer and the returned 10-28 shows you and your info belonging to that plate.

If you have a YOM plate displayed and the real plate inside then that would be displaying false plates on the vehicle and fall under "Operating without proper registration" 321.98 in the IA state code or is it 321.99. In IA we have antique auto plates but it limits the distance traveled in one year to include shows and cruises ONLY in the law.

I didn't read through all 4 pages just the first page and commented so if this was covered sorry.

I'll be back in IA from my military trip on Friday if you have any legal ?s PM me and I'll get you the IA code for the answer. Good luck and stay safe.

  18. I will do that. I am interested in what you have to say, since the local DOT office and sheriff both told me to put on the YOM plates, and carry the real ones in my car. The local sheriff has a 67 Ford done up like a squad car, and he runs YOM plates on the bumpers, Maybe he is illeagal to? Ive seen some of your posts before, starting to be a few Iowa guys on here. Thats a good deal.

Any NC hambers looking for the Statute that allows the running of YOM plates can go here and look it up it may be a good idea to print it and keep a copy just in case it is questioned

    http://www.ncleg.net/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/BySection/Chapter_20/GS_20-63.html

The complete text of G.S. 20-63(d) reads:
"Registration plates issued for a motor vehicle other than a motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer shall be attached thereto, one in the front and the other in the rear: Provided, that when only one registration plate is issued for a motor vehicle other than a truck-tractor, said registration plate shall be attached to the rear of the motor vehicle. The registration plate issued for a truck-tractor shall be attached to the front thereof. Provided further, that when only one registration plate is issued for a motor vehicle and this motor vehicle is transporting a substance that may adhere to the plate so as to cover or discolor the plate or if the motor vehicle has a mechanical loading device that may damage the plate, the registration plate may be attached to the front of the motor vehicle.
Any motor vehicle of the age of 35 years or more from the date of manufacture may bear the license plates of the year of manufacture instead of the current registration plates, if the current registration plates are maintained within the vehicle and produced upon the request of any person.
The Division shall provide registered owners of motorcycles and motorcycle trailers with suitably reduced size registration plates."

I'm from Minnesota and had run YOM plates on my '51 Ford Club Coupe for about 15 years. One day, I went to the mail box, and there was a new set of collector plates and a letter saying I could no longer run my YOM plates because the number had been re-issued. They were real nice about it, and didn't charge me a cent, but as a result, I can no longer run my YOM plates. (I keep them in the trunk and will mount them for a show if I have the time.)

If Iowa is like Colorado, you can run the plates, but you have to keep the registered ones in the car. The state DMV gives you a document allowing YOM plates to be used. Not sure if Iowa hands out a similar document. I was stopped by a local cop out here who obviously didn't know about YOM plates. That was his only reason for stopping me. I believe when he called it in someone informed him that it was okay, because I didn't get a ticket.

or better yet, is it legal in Wisconsin...?

  25. All you have to do is Ask or Google. It takes, what, maybe five seconds. I have done your work for you. It has taken me longer to type this response to you than it did to look up the info.

Oh, once again, it's YEAR OF MANUFACTURE!!!

    You're welcome.

    that explains the attitude...

  27. Yes, they have to match the build year of the vehicle to be legally run as a vintage tag.

  28. Ya think??? If that toy wagon is all you have, that explains the lack of ability in looking the topic up.

Florida also runs YOM Plates, but they are validated by yearly stickers, we also have STREET ROD plates. If thats not enough you can choose from 133 other type plates that have been passed by our legislature.

If you get stopped, relax mostly THE MAN just wants to look............

They're not worth the hassle, at least on Ontario. The obvious requirement is that they must match the year of your car and cannot be in use. That by itself is not easy since the same plate number will be used for different years, but that's not the main problem.

Here, if you run historic vehicle plates you can only use the car to drive to and from shows and registered events. So not even a local rod run counts. Screw that. The reason for the restrictions. They're cheaper to register, so they had to make it impossible to use for most folks.

I personally can't be bothered to change the plates for shows.
