I have a 53 Dodge that has a Gyromatic Fluid drive transmission(M6 ?). I thought I wanted to change it out for a 3-speed. But, after reading about the Gyromatic I wonder if I should keep the original ******. It sounds a bit unique as a trasition from stick to automatics. What advice would anybody give me. This car is to be my daily driver. thanks

I had a Gyro-Matic in my '50 Coronet. It slipped a lot and wouldn't downshift when it needed to. I think it robbed a lot of power. What a slush box. I hated that thing. I MUCH prefer three speeds.

  3. I have had the original fluid drive/gyromatic/tiptoematic trans in my 50 Chrysler with no trouble as a daily for 10 years before I got my buick skylark. And I still have no trouble with it . But, it is an inefficient transmision compared to a modern auto. With the gearing in the rear axle, and the slipping of the converter, wieght of the car , I get 14 mpg on the open road at 55-60 mph.And its a pig off the line.EVEN DOWN HILL! I plan on a trans swap upgrade one of these days.
