I've been on here a few years now and I haven't hit 1000 posts yet ... I'm definitely not shy when it comes to posting. I comment on stuff all the time, I've sold things in the classifieds, etc. I don't know how people make thousands of posts in just a couple years.
They're post whores, or they spend 3/4 of their time in the "New to the H.A.M.B.?" section responding to introduction posts. I've said this before...but post counts don't mean shit. There was one guy, now banned, who replied to almost every thread having to do with engines...getting 1400+ posts in under a year...making comments such as (in his response to a query about Chevrolet SBC 461 heads) "hey mctommy...if u have 461 heads on a 327 then u welded tham on HA! where do u people come from...another dimension HA! just call me pop. " ....because he apparently thought 461 referred to the engine size. On the other hand, there was a guy whose first post (or nearly first) was about how he hand-made a frame. Beautiful work, well documented, and it was one of the better tech threads we've ever had. Once again....post counts don't mean a god-damn thing. I'd rather see 20 posts from new guys asking honest questions (even if they've been asked before), or posting up their first build...than see crap from people who "think" they know what a 461 is. The only sin here (other than using the term ratrod) is to act like you know what you are talking about when you don't.
After a few years here, I think I'm still an FNG for limited posting, but i'm here everyday absorbing the posts for my soon to start (hopefully) coupester build, which I hope to document. I also go to the library a lot, but I haven't written a book yet. Or I could just add "Sweeeet" to every post and wouldn't be an FNG. So put up some Buick pics! Just noticed, I'm a newbie!! RB
The wealth of knowledge on this site is amazing, you really don't ever have to post if that's all you are looking for. I guess that's why I don't post much, either I'm just looking for an answer to a question, or someone already said what I was going to say. With all the people on here it happens a lot, and that's not a bad thing. Mainly, I just browse at night and get motivated to work on my car the next day. The only reason I have half the posts I do is from my build thread, and it's best feature is to show people what not to do haha. Wether you post or not, this is just a good place to spend some internet time.
I just like to read what eveyone else has to say. You learn alot more by keeping your mouth shut with your eyes and ears open. I'm too new to add anything really good but if I ever get the chance to help a fellow HAMB'er I will.
Im here to learn from the ones that know what they are doing. This place is great. My wife says IM OBSESSED. Who cares what she thinks I need answers to my stupid questions.
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt" - Abraham Lincoln (although I don't think he was referring to high post counts...)
I have a low post count but check the site once a day for a good topic or to see if I can find another part or project...I have had the opportunity to actually meet a couple real good people in person through a couple of great transactions on here, this site really helps with cabin fever during these cold Michigan months.....saves on my fuel bill in the garage.
Many times I start writing a response to a thread. I get halfway through writing, and then it occurs to me that my reply won't contribute anything to the conversation and I back off. Maybe I should have done it this time... Hey Dirt Slinger, my wife calls it "car porn". I'm cool with that.
I havn't posted much, I have tried, I started a few threads but very few replies, so I just decided no one is interested in what I have to say or the things I need information about. So I quietly spend a few hours every day checking what the more interesting folks have to say.
A lot of people generously put a lot of effort into threads for our benefit on the HAMB. If no one posts on their thread their work sinks quite quickly down the board. I am another who has a lot more to learn from this place than to offer, but try and post when I see a thread that is interesting, informative or entertaining so as to keep it alive on the board. Otherwise, my posts are mainly questions. I hope some time to be able to reciprocate a little for what I have gained from this place.
i get flamed because i do not know how it was done in the 60's that is when i started hot rods so i mostly look and leave
as said before 60 ford...you gotta have thick skin some days. some judge with out knowing and some times i find that there is a couple of really hot threads and your question will get back paged before it gets seen, just depends on the day I have found.
If every member posted once a day we would have 3683 pages (128,938 members) per day to check them all. Thank God for the low post members. Vergil
Been on the HAMB 11+ years. I dont have alot to contribute. I get all my questions answered every time. I love this place, I just keep quite most of the time.
Check my member # and post count...that sorta tells my story. Lots of reasons for low post count: 1. I "lurked" on this site for almost a year before signing up. Newbies were pretty routinely flamed by a guy called "Germ" -- and he was merciless. I'd have been among the first 500 on the HAMB if I hadn't been afraid of what he's say about me and my cars! 2. I didn't feel like I had much to contribute. I've been building hot rods since I was 12 (when I bought my first car -- and my Dad made me take it back!) but still consider myself to be pretty much an amateur. When you look at what some guys on the HAMB know, and what they can do ... I'm like Ned in the first reader. Latent insecurity compounded by the certain knowledge of inadequacy 3. When I do have a bit of information to pass along, I most often find that someone has already said it. I don't spend enough time in front of the monitor to offer much more than "me too" when I do stumble onto an area where I might have a little knowledge or experience. Some of the guys with post-counts in 5 or 6 digits have lots of those "Sick!" or "That's the shit's" kinda posts to their credit. They haven't learned that if you don't have anything to say ... then don't. 4. I spend way too much time in the shop, or hangin' out at a buddy's place
i just like to read !! the info that you can get here is priceless !! the entertainment is just a plus ,so i would say H.A.M.B.ers that don't post much might have been the quiet kid in school ?
David I read all the posts and they're all good, Hell I reek of "outdated knowledge" LOL. But you my friend nailed it! work on'm, drive'm, break'm, fix'm, read about'm on the H.A.M.B it's all GOOD. Lets see some pic's when you get out from under it.
x2, i feel better knowing i'm not the only one who's wife thinks he has a problem, she's says its like i'm afraid i'm gonna miss something........ maybe i am
Interesting post. I often wondered how many out there are like me & soak in as much as possible, but don't really have much to contribute yet. I am learning alot while building my 31 A coupe. You guys are great & I appreciate how much you share. I have been on other sites that just seem to be like a bunch of old ladies just b-tching at each other.
I lurked for about a year, and saw what could happen to you if you jumped in not knowing what you're doing. Then I started posting if I thought I had something to contribute, or a real question that might be of general interest. I see one of the earlier posters on this thread mentioned how he would get a reply half done, and then abandon it because he realized that his thoughts were not on point. I can really identify with that. As to "post whores", you know who you are.
Everybody should post great way to meet people .I never had any friends in Michigan before or canada or california or I forget where ridin dirty from ,I also talk to some of these guys on the phone ,Always glad to answer questions .So post We all share the same passion Hotrods
I guess im just a post whore. I like to get amongst it and say my piece. Im no mechanical genius, but i have been into hot rods since i was 11, and im nearly 45. I have studied and learned a lot over the years and still read more than i post. I call things as i see em, and thats what i like about the hamb. A lot will pull you up if you fuck up. thats priceless in todays fast food world. Best damn way of learning, so take what you want, give when you can, and just enjoy the hell out of it!
I decided a little while a go to start posting more, most of it is just general encouragement, thanks and involvement in a post. I love the humour that comes out on the HAMB and like to add my bit if I can, but pick and choose what I post on and whether I add any value at all to a thread or am I just pushing something amazing down the page and also try and stay away from one word "cool, rad or awesome" type posts . I was not lucky enough to have grown up around hot rods or wrenched on cars since a junior or anything like that and in OZ I had limited access to classics so don't have the knowledge. But I love cars and that's why I come back and read as much as I can, the knowledge I have gained from people like Rikster and Ryan and everyone else will stay with me forever. I probably have pushed something down the page, but thought I would add my bit. And Garry Carters comment below could some it up for me. Funny as.
I've been on here for several years, usually spend about an hour each evening. Using the "search" generally cures what ails me. There are some keyboard heroes on here that are quick to run people down, but what can you do that's life. People on the HAMB are mostly friendly and helpful,I for one can appriciate that. The main reason I don't post alot is crummy computer skills,I'm working it though. As soon as figure out how to post photos I'll have some stuff to contribute. This forum is great either way.
I think I got you all beat on low post count. I signed up to research and learn and been doin a lot of that. When I feel I can contribute something worhwhile I do.
Posting is over rated. There are too many people that make up for what me or someone else may post. Tons to read and by the time I go thru stuff someone posted something again. Most things get repeated anyways. Mike
