Don't know about the shorter wheelbase - I thought this was the case for the previous (Cortina Mk III shape) model? The Mk V shaped ones I know all came from SA, the Sierra shaped model was Portuguese-built... The 2.8 choice was because by that time (early 90s) paradoxically they were more plentiful than the Essex V6 (which was a better unit).
