If I worried about stuff like this, these wouldn’t be the vehicles that I would be building with my two boys to drive daily as 16-year-olds. Now...they will have seatbelts and disk brakes on the front, but otherwise...just old pickups.

But, my kids have also been riding on long trips in old cars since they were born too.

I’m more concerned that when their time does come to leave this world, they know where they are headed. None of us know if we will make it through the next day...

  3. I sometimes imagine what the early explorers did. Can anyone possibly imagine gathering a hundred or so other "sane" minded folks and get onto a giant wooden ship loaded with food and water and then setting sail into a giant Ocean with the HOPE that there is something on the other side? Think about what they went through to try to find the new world, not including how many died at sea due to hunger, disease, ships sinking, etc etc. Now those guys had some giant brass balls!

You're grandson is right, new cars are safer.

The conversation, Not one of my grandchildren were allowed to ride in my "Hot Rods" I understood and respected my children's decision on this subject so I understand your dilemma. That being said, I Sometimes wonder what the world is coming to in many respects. The safety issue in cars has improved immensely, but the world is not a safer place or the place it was when I was young, now 72. I rode cycles for 40+years, raced open wheel cars 21 years so I guess I never thought a Hot Rod or a performance car was a dangerous thing, I still enjoy cruising/shows and Enjoy the hobby, suggest you do the same and do what YOU are comfortable with.

Your grandson is 20 and scared to drive down the road in a hot rod ?I saw on the history channel the other night that the average age of a B-17 bomber airman was 21.
I wonder how old these Brave men are?

When it's your time to go, it's your time. You'll never come back. It' now or never, so why not do what you want now ?

I don't want to be on my death bed, wishing I'd had that last slice of pizza.

Screw the "conversation"; I drive what I want to, and what I want is at least thirty years old if not 60 or more. I've been in the automotive industry for thirty years and I don't see any reason to buy into the new simply because it is new.

Take that 20 year old out in a hot rod and do an unsustainable and non eco friendly, tire melting burnout. See if you convert him...if he cries that your carbon footprint just increased, or some such crap, give up.

  17. Well, unfortunately, yes. A kid that went to our high school got killed by a drunk driver while in his RPU. This was pre '59.

When I was 20 never thought I'd live past 30....So I guess I'm way ahead of the curve.

When I was 20, I was a smooth arm 2nd class Boilerman, ran the forward fireroom on a WWII built 2250 destroyer, had 30 3rd class, firemen, & fireman deuces working under me & was smoking 3 packs of Luckies a day. Was just finishing my 2nd 9 month vacation in Viet Nam. My, how times change ...

One of my platoon leaders in Vietnam made it through as a Marine lieutenant without a scratch. He rode a bicycle completely across the US to raise funds for disabled veterans and died in bed when a huge tree fell on his home during a storm. Bad things happen all of the time.

Sorry to say, but your grandson is a pussy, and not the good kind...
Give me 10 minutes with me and my roadster and his te-education should be just about complete. Either he’ll be more correctly informed as to his delusional beliefs or he will need to change his diaper.
My youngest son is 22. When he was 16, he ran my roadster at the Hamb drags flawlessly. Even peddling to compensate for a slick track condition just like his old man taught him.
He was a happy camper that day, until his old man ran faster the next run...
    God, I love my son.

My grandpa and I are planning a 3000 mile trip this summer. He's driving his 49 Stude and I'll be taking my 66 Chevy. Both of us will be pulling vintage travel trailers. I don't see how it is any different than taking the freeway from one side of town to the other.

You or anyone else cant do a fucking thing for these kids ,they've been conditioned ( we use to call it brainwashed) to reject anything that burns fossil fuel and doesn't have 20 airbags. Shows you how quick the education system and the media can alter things ..........downright Scarry !!!! Remember the movie " Waterworld" , the "badguys" smoked and used fossil fuel burning machines , "they" destroyed the world ....that's a powerful message to a young malleable mind !!

The kid made a reasonable observation and the geezers leaped on him with full vengeance. Lighten up and recognize a teaching moment when one arrives.

There is very little that I can think of that a 20 year old kid who is afraid to go outside has to teach me. Accept maybe how to work this fucking I phone!
