Today I put the finishing touches on the chassis work...I still need to get the driveshaft made. Finished up the crossmember mods for the 4 gear hooked up the lincage, and got tuned in. Finished the little plumbing on the brakes and clutch and got them bled out. Now its on to bodywork. A couple more weekends of hard labor and she should be in paint. Anybody out there like to sand?

i HATE to sand, but woulda helped with some of the other stuff if you'd have called.

are those little 180 degree pieces between the hurst/'57 front motor mounts and the rubber donuts homemade or storebought?

    That looks real nice!

  5. Nice looking job. I have a soft spot for 40's

I was wondering the same thing about the engine mounts. Those U-shaped pieces, where did they come from? I thought the Hurst style mount sat right on the stock Ford (or similar) motor mounts.

Also, watch those brake hoses. I've had the loop in that direction and had the tire rub the hose when turning. I reversed the loop, and problem was solved. It cost me 2 brake hoses + labor for that educational experience.

  6. Looks like it's gonna be a nice dependable package.

I miss my last 40 coupe but look forward to the next one I do.

Atch the spacers came with the mount. That was a complete n.o.s set up I scored.

  8. I seem to remember and i could be wrong that that those U shaped spacers are for either 46-8 or 49-51 ford swaps.but idf the carbs sit level when its all together they will work fine,I also remeber that BITD the drivers side tended to settle after a few "hooks" w a slicks and stick tranny's  :D whole thing looks great, always liked 39-40's

Troy, Did you really get anything done after you left
    my place ????
Thanks again for the floor metal. RegularJD (Mikee) and
I did however get the dash, steering, and the body squared
    up on the Deuce.
I think you may be ahead of my '40 now.
Just put the body back on before we go to B-ville,
and it will turn a nice shade of red.

Gret job.......we'll see you in MOKAN this year???

  14. Yes, they were for the 49-51 Ford install. Did several 32-48 SBC installs in the late 50s/early 60s, the hurst mount set flat on the orig Ford biscuts and orig bolt/washer/nut and cotter pin.
Still have a couple Hursts that came out of 40 Fords and no "C" spacers.
My Cad Hursts in my 40 set flat on the biscuts as do my Olds ones in my 34
The down side of the Hurst was you couldnt run a stock fuel pump.

After my long trip to Bonneville last year in my '40, the
Hurst mount had settled until the front of the pan
was resting on the front axle spring u-bolts that attach thru
    the crossmember.
Its also an original Hurst saddle mount, pads, bolts, nuts,
    and cotter pins.
Either the front of my chevy pan is thicker, or the
addition of the C spacers are necessary.

My old '40 was built in the eary 50's (me too) and had
    a early chevy(58 283) with a 39 top loader,
and had C spacers installed when I found it.
I had removed them when I did a motor and trans change.
So that explains why Troy is using them, and I will be
putting them back in as well when another new motor
    goes back in my car.

Hey Troy! Looking good! I remember the workmanship on the model A coupe, when you were at the drags 2 years ago. that was a nice car.

seeing the hurst mount brought back memories for me.

When I was 15 or 16, I made my own front mount in the high school shop. I copied the Hurst mount from a picture in Car Craft. I put a `58 chevy 283 in my 40 coupe.

Hope to see you and the `40 at Mokan.

Thanks for the kudos everyone. It will definately be at MOKAN on August 26th. As long as I dont break anything going too or coming back from Bonneville...:)

The brake lines had me a little worried to at first, but after the frame settled with the engine and trans in, I turned the wheels lock to lock and they dont seem to want to rub. And after I put the body on it will probably go down at least another 2" takeing some more slack out of the hoses.

The C-spacers were installed because as soon as the engine went in it wanted to sit on the U-bolts...I need to flip them so the arch is on the inside.

    See you all in August....

  19. Lookin sharp man!

  20. The earlier sbc pans, 56-about 64, were shaped a little different in front, a little thinner. I think it was for the 65 and later pass cars that the pan was reshaped, deeper in front. I had a 78 pass 350 in the wifes 40 with a Hurst, no spacers and it touched the u bolts, pulled it and put 57 pan on it, no trouble. Nowdays you do whatever you have to to make it work.
This frame looks Great! Clean install of the 4 spd linkage, frame mods and all. Am doing one of my 40s simular to that.
Keep up the great work. From another 40 freak!! Dave
