Hot Rods Halibrand 201 ***UPDATED****

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hot Rod Ron, Nov 14, 2023.

  1. I have all brand-new internals from Hot Rod Works. The crashed case was very reasonable and will still yield some of the necessary measurements. The case I want to have machined will have 36 bells on it that have been chemically dipped clean so we can use those and the stock 36 center section, all new internals from hot rod works, and the crashed case and should be able to pull all the measurements we need to make a go at the unmachined case.

Thank you all for the comments so far and info on the crashed case.

Have your machinist take lots of photos if you aren't around when the machining is being done, he might want to be left by himself, best not to have any distractions.

Take your measurements off the stock banjo center for the width, side hole spacing, pinion bore and depth, pinion support bearing bore and depth. Make the lower shaft exactly 3” below the pinion centerline. Then all you will need to research is the lower bearing bores and distances, and cutting the ends. Easy as pie.

Hot Rod Ron the 101 case will not yield any dimensions your going to need. The 101 is for the Model A rear every part in the A is completely different and much weaker than the parts in the V-8 rear.

To echo Ron the 101 isn't going to provide any useful dimensions beyond the hole pattern for the rear cover.

Do you plan on pruning the extra appendages from the front of the case that aren't on a typical 201?

  6. This has been a great learning curve, and the 101 is definitely different all around, so it looks like using the original 36 Ford center section and bells will give what we need, and together with all the new parts and lower shaft, we should be able to get the case machined. I am speaking with two of the people who have been a wealth of info here on this thread and might have something worked out.

    @Hot Rod Ron,
After our conversation, I went back and looked more closely at your original post. I'm betting that that case is magnesium. Just has that look to me.

I know you said you were going to do the vinegar test. How did that turn out?

  9. Yes, I did the test, and it's indeed magnesium. I will be in touch next week to let you know what else I find out.

Just to throw my hat in the ring, I have a NOS, Torrance V8 quick change , a 201. This was never used and came from a late friend of mine. It has Torrance cast into the side of the change gear housing. It is complete with one change gear set still in the box. I took a pair of 35-36 side bells and had them powder coated red and attached them to the center section. I was going to hang it from my garage rafters as a conversation starter. Thanks to medical problems, it is leaning against the wall of the garage all bright and shiny. What would be a good and fair price to sell it? I live in California and due to the previously mentioned medical problems can't ship it. What say ye?

The more I look at that unfinished 201 case, the more it appears to me that the bearing bores are actually already finished.

If that is indeed the case, what is missing here are a bunch of holes, some blind tapped, and some through plain.

That is a whole lot less of a challenge, and can be done in a well-trammed knee mill, with an accurate DRO.

Cool find and my buddy machined a few nos ones many years ago. He was used to repairing quick changes as he raced sprint cars and midgets.
It was done a Bridgeport and he had or made a few jigs for location of center lines
It would have been awesome to have a CNC back in the day to play with such a cool project..

  16. Brian B*** has it right now, and we think he can do all the machining. The case has no machined surfaces at all. I let Brian know about this thread. If he wants to post on here, he will. I will update the thread once I have more info.

  17. Thanks to Brian B***, who took the challenge on and was able to machine and ***emble the housing to a point where I could take over, finish putting it together, and put it on the streets. Brian and I both agreed it should not be a museum piece but put on the streets, making noise.

I see that the rear cover plate has the location as Torrence City Cal.

is this a variance of the early Culver City cover plates?

I ask this because I thought they were just “Torrance” after the company moved there.

The rear cover plate has the number ‘H 102’. Weren’t they 101, 201 and 301?

The cover is reversible , flip the cover around so it's on the bottom and it's 201 H

For whatever reason after the move Halibrand only updated the "Culver" portion of the tag.

They are interchangeable between the 101 and 201 size housings. H-102 was the part number for the cover.

  23. The rear cover was something that I picked up at a swap meet years ago and did not come with the housing when I got it.

  24. All installed for mock-up. Everything fit perfectly.
