Whatever that device is, it is mounted where the pinion gear p***es through the case. I don't know how that could make a 2 speed.
Some place on the HAMB is a thread about Halibrand 2 speed rear ends. The search function ****s, you have to use the proper words or phrase. There was a story about Roger Ward showing up at a sports car race with his miget and they laughed at him with his in-out gearbox. He proceeded to show them the way home with his 2 speed rearend. Pat Warren in LA made a copy of the Halibrand quickchange rear and he devised his own 2sp gearcase that bolted to the rear of his and Halibrand's QC. I have one of his setups missing the mainshaft.
@redo32 Interesting ,, if I thinking correct The 2 speed part , does it over drive or underdrive Let say if you have the two gears set up for 4:00 What does it change to when Engaged ?
That has a slider on the lower shaft so you can connect and disconnect the lower shaft. On sprint cars, it allows you to do away with your in and out box. With no in and out box, the front u-joint is bolted directly to the crank flange. That also means the torque tube can be longer (the length of the deleted in and out box)which is supposed to give you better forward traction.
That makes sense. The back gear housing has to be a bit deeper to accomodate the extra gears. So the gears on the lower shaft have to be retained by either a bushing or a bearing. The slider locks one or the other on the lower shaft.
Here: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/what-is-this-quick-change-rear-end.1301340/ I've always used Google, not the HAMB search function, include HAMB in your search, always (usually) gets results.
