I would be surprised if you saved 20 lbs .

Ingenious application of parts back then? Mean twist, however...
My brother bought a friend's roadster pickup, '49 Olds rear behind 360 HP 327 with M21 Muncie...
He pulled the Olds axles, they had a 20% twist, both sides...right at inboard ends of splines.
Brother insisted the splines were mfd that way! "They'd have to be..." (much laughter on my part) The 'R' and 'L' stamps on the flange faces were on opposite sides...axles had been switched, after being marked at one time, reversing their 'set'. Axles were same lengths.
    Chubby Checker was right...

Yep I agree. Maybe 5lbs. Just the weight of the cast bearing carrier. Maybe 2-3lbs each. The locknuts on my setup would be lighter than the retainer plate on a 9" setup. My Lincoln backing plates are drilled so that would be a wash. Maybe a 9" drum is lighter by a bit but not much. So...but I am curious. Maybe I'll weigh it all tomorrow! Stay tuned.
    Thanks for the help guys!
