I have a 27 coupe with a Halibrand rear I am thinking about selling. I do not know much about these and was curious what they are selling for, I have looked online and they are all over the map on prices. I am going to be selling it complete hub to hub with an extra set of gears. It has wide five drums with fairly new brake pads. The only thing i think it is needing is new axle seals. I drive the car all the time and seems to work perfectly! Are there any identifying marks on these also?
There has been a complete franklin champ size for $500 with a full set of gears for sale in the HAMB classifieds for a week or two in NY.
How many bolts hold the axle tubes on? If it has 11 or 12, more than likely it is a Champ. If it has 10, it is the V8 style. Generally the wide-five hubs were used on the larger Champ style rears.
I just bought a beat and broken V8 Halibrand QC (Culver City) with tubes converted to 9 inch axles and backing plates for $300.00. It will take a LOT of love to make it useful again. But I'm in the fixing old crap business so no complaints here.... Why do you want to sell yours? They're bitchen..
This is the only pic I have right now until I get home. I am only selling due to me not ever having one and not knowing anything about it. Plus I am trying to get some money together for my new motor. Thats the Main reason. But if it is not worth anything I will keep it in the car.
It looks like it might be a big part of the character of that car along with the push bar. As that particular model doesn't seem to bring high bucks would you come out ahead after you replaced it with a later rear end? In the long run they aren't any or much harder to work on than any other rear end and you have the advantage of being able to swap gears for different situations like running at the drags or making a long cross country road trip where you want better gas mileage. The only bad thing I know about them is that a lot of guys don't like the constant noise they put out especially on long trips. Some love it as part of the whole package but others hate it. But still, after you did pull it out and sell it how much cash for an engine would you have after you built another rear end and bought another set of wheels? Not a whole lot me thinks.
Yes, that is a "Champ" style rear. They are more stout than the V8 versions and were the answer for racers as the HP started getting too much the V8 centers to handle.
Well I just might keep it in there then! I do love the noise! I will need to find some axle seals any Ideas where I CAN FIND THEM?
If I were you I would not sell it, but on the other hand I would like to have it and I don't have two nickles to rub together. So I am going to tell you that it isn't woth what it would take for you to haul it up here to my place and trade me out of a 9" Ford. If I was after one I personally would be after a Champ and anyone throwing any torque at one is also going to be after a Champ. I couldn't price it for you but I have seen them offered in the last year or two in the 800 dollar range. I don't know if they sold for that but I have seen them offered for that.
No such thing as a "Franklin" - try F-R-A-N-K-L-A-N-D. The Halibrand in question is indeed a Champ - it should have Type 301 cast on the housing....
Weasel You are absolutely correct on the frankland but in my mind it has always been F-R-A-N-K-L-U-N-D and I really have to be careful when I am writing it. I would still like to get a look at the hubs I'll just about bet its got HOWE hubs if it is a wide five with discs.
I think the Culver units had six bolts on the rear cover...had one way back..and they bolted to '40 bells...
Well I have decided to keep the rear in the car, I found the axle seals at my local Napa store and I am in the process of replacing them. I also found new pads and they will be here Tuesday.
Looks to me like wide5 ford juice backplate, frankland (likely) hubs and buick drums - basically and old dirt track rear. The buick drums cut for wide5 rear can be salty by themselves.
