A HamBer is a member of this forum. A Hammer is a universal tool used to repair off topic British cars. There is subtle difference
I've always referred to the members of the Brotherhood of the HAMB as HAMBsters. The only people I could think of who use the term HAM-Buh are @VANDENPLAS and all those from BAHston .
Oh thanks! Just something else I have to think about! To people that don't know about this place I call it "The HAMB Message Board." To those that know, I call it The HAM, salient B. I've discovered if you slur your words a bit, no one can tell for sure what you said.... I am pretty sure the world is not going to end either way we pronounce the name of this place.
I refer to Membership here when I mention their screename in written conversation as Hamber or Hambers, so and so...blah blah blah...ha ha ha...never had anyone complain yet... I know its been said the @ with the screename eliminates the need for using the Hamb'r, Hamber but I like to use the Hamber reference for those not familiar with the autolinked @ process...
I have suggested to many over the years to check out the Hamb on the internet if they show interest in vintage Hotrod/Custom...I generally mention that's Ham with a B...followed by expanding it's full non abbreviated name...Hokey Ass Message Board...and follow with it's truly one of the best of it's kind out there...
Well I don't normally talk to very many people who don't know what the HAMB is so its never really come up.
LOL...I have never considered pronouncing the silent B at the end. But, in true HAMB fashion, a thread like this is always good for some laughs and a big part of why I hang out here.
When my wife's daughter came over on Saturday she asked where I was. My wife said he is out of town this weekend for the HAMB races in south Missouri. The girl thought I had gone to some kind of pig races and she couldn't believe I would go to something like that.
Now this is a pig race! https://www.google.com/imgres?imgur...mge&source=sh/x/im/can/6#imgrc=Iz1T38IJpzsU0M
Hello, The HAMB listing is pronounced HAM. The B seems silent, although it stands for some letter. No need to pronounce the B... "I am writing stories for the HAM...BUH." Not necessary with normal words or abbreviations ending the way it does. TOMB is toom not tombuh. So, it is King Tut's tomb not toombuh. In the case of talking to a bunch of HAMB people, it is easier to say HAM. As much as people like to say a classification of people, wouldn't it be proper to say I am talking to some folks from the HAMB. Not calling them hammers. Which sounds like a bunch or pigs or swine... or a tool... which is another story. Slang in its stretched out form... Jnaki But, in the course of quick wording and easy slang, remember, the correct labeling was the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class that turned into the dreaded "gassers" labeling, which give all kinds of funny connotations. Ha! It is nice to see and communicate with the folks here, called members of the HAMB group. Although some like to HAM it up. pun intended. YRMV
Careful there! Calling it the "HAMB Message Board" is like referring to "VIN Numbers." You could get called out on the Pet Peeves thread!
I guess I've been mispronouncing words all my life, because I add the b to the end of words like comb, bomb, tomb, and definitely to HAMB. It seems strange to me to find out you guys leave the b silent. Why the hell is it there if it's not pronounced?
The B is silent. If I heard someone say "HAM-BUH", I'd probably laugh. A little awkward when your church friends see the HAMB sticker on your ride and ask what it stands for... Hotrods And My Buddies!
I always tell people it's the H, A, M, B as in boy. When I go to shows and take pictures, I always ask the owners if I can take pictures of their cars and where they will be posted. I had one lady go to search for her car's picture and she entered H, A, M, C, and boy was she surprised!
I always say the name and spell it out for them. I have a southern accent, thats w hy I spell it out...............
You on the HAMB? That's what I ask people who might be. "OHh nothing " is usually next. Once in a while they know.
