HAMB Auction Prices---How about a Raffle?!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Cadillacin Marcus, Jan 25, 2004.

  1. Not to be a dick....I'm all for helping Ryan and the HAMB ...But.... come on!!! Whats with the Insane Auction prices?!! Yikes!! It seems that the average guy doesn't even have a chance to bid or win, for that matter, nor will the avaerage guy even place a bid because of the inflated prices,,..Kinda Sucks! Thats why I say Raffle it!..That way everyone gets a chance to win and Ryan still gets money for the HAMB and everyone is happy.
I know I speak for alot of the guys and gals on here...

  2. Are you saying we have our own class of goldchainers that drive up prices? [IMG]

I'm not saying abolish the Auctions all together unless we all voted on it first. But maybe run a few raffles in the mix.I know its more involed having to send the money and all,but with paypal its not so bad...Anyways............

Why don't you stop worrying about money and just enjoy the HAMB? People can donate money however they please or they can choose not too... The HAMB is free and no one is obligated to bid on or place auctions... People are obligated to have fun...

  7. I do(Did)enjoy it,Thank You very much, and I'm not worried,as a matter of fact I'm to the point where I could care less, ..I think you missed my point entirely.

  8. I don't think things are getting out of hand, Marcus.

People bid according to what they feel they are getting out of the HAMB... to most, it's daily entertainment and on demand info... priceless is what I say... $100 for a do-dad... then you factor in that you are perpetuating what we have here... and it's a win-win situation.

Bottom line, the HAMB auctions are NOT about getting good deals that you can turn for a profit nor selling a car that you haven't been able to sell under the guise of charity... they are about helping this place, and in turn, helping yourself, out.

Hey Marcus... Just to let ya know, i will be having a raffle in the near future. I'm gonna be selling a 34 5 window pretty cheap, and the winner of the raffle gets to buy the car for the low price. Ryan keeps the raffle money for the board.

I understand where Marcus is comimg from. Yes, I use the HAMB almost daily. There's a lot of great info and entertainment here. I even paid $50. for a T-shirt in an auction once, but now when I see something come up, the bids go way beyond my price range. It's not that the HAMB isn't worth it (or the item) but let's face it, some people on here have considerably larger wallets than others. I think the auctions are great but I also think that raffles are a good idea. It gives everyone an equal chance.

I see what your bitching about Marcus, but the whole idea is to help Ryan pay for the HAMB. I couldn't win any of the Auctions either, but what the hell. They are doing what they were intended to do....

For the most part....the majority of the people using this board will probably NEVER contribute financially. A good example is the calendars. They were very reasonably priced and filled with some great art. If everybody that could afford one, actually purchased one, we would've sold 3000.

    Raffles won't work...too many logistics.

It's a great thing that people contribute items to be auctioned and I hope it never stops....Comes from the goodness of the heart...not whining from the mouth.

,,,,,Awwright ,I'm cool...Marcus..if I was outta line...I apoligize. This post just got my dander up.I just wanted to support the Hamb (and will continue to do so) and I thought this was a good thing.....
The main reason I got hostile is that I know what it takes to produce an original piece and the time that is involved. And the fact that I thought this post was directed towards me.(years of oil paint and turpintine make ya mighty parinoid) [IMG]
    All is good.

It's all good... And I totally agree with you on art prices... I have three sisters that are all fine artists and they all have problems evaluating the value of their work. It's a tough thing to do man... I think Picasso's auction is at $225??? On the open market, that art is worth atleast $500 knowing the amazing quality of Picasso's work...

And Brush, not sure if you got that PM I sent you a few weeks ago, but I'ved been absolutely awwwwed by your work lately. Amazing stuff man.

marcus, there WAS a raffle a couple of years back, and it was a lame fuckaround. NOT Ryan's fault though. i know i and other "winners" never got their prizes, but instead stupid stories and excuses from the party responsible. i hope whoever got my prize enjoys it.

auctions are fine, and if you don't like it, just send ryan a couple of bucks.

I certainly hope the remarks were not aired at me, either.
I love the board and want to see it contiued.
I do not have DEEP POCKETS, but sacrifice some thing(s) to get what I do want.

I agree with Ryan that not all can afford to contribute to the cost of the board, but do enjoy, none the less.
I am happy to help here, so those can enjoy.

What I have really gotten from the board is no where what I have contributed. You just can not put a price on the wealth of knowledge shared here.

But, I agree, you do not have to win an auction to contribute to the cost of up keep here, I am sure a dollar or two from the membership at large will amount to more than any single contributor.

    Ryan, thanks for this place.

  22. I think that its great that some deep pocket hambers get to purchase the auction items. Support the hamb but I see the point too. I had a lot of fun watching the raffle posts for the hamb drags motor. I could not compete with the price of a auction for a 34 five window. But you can bet on me buying a raffle ticket. Haveing fun watching the posts. In truth this just proves that nothing is free. That what one thinks is fair is much differant than what another feels it is. There was a post a while back by Ryan that tossed around a fee idea. I thought that was the fairest idea to date my 2 cents.

The HAMB is free. Things could change I guess, but I don't see myself ever charging people for the HAMB even if I have to foot the bill entirely... A fee based service just doesn't fit my "business model."

Again, no one needs to feel like they should have an auction or bid on one. If you have not done either, you should feel absolutely no guilt - the HAMB is FREE! I don't ask, suggest, or push for auctions - they just happen... I'm VERY grateful for them, but they are not what the HAMB is about. The HAMB is about hot rods, kustoms, and what not... NOT MONEY!

  24. I sold a carb here, so I had the buyer forward the $$ to Ryan. I donated a monitor, so I had that $$$ forwarded to Ryan. You can help out in little ways too, I did. At least I hope those guys did, you know who you are!!! [IMG]

Gee, I have an auction/raffle (?) item that'll be posted in the next few weeks...whenever it's done. Something VERY cool that I'm pouring countless hours into...just trying to make it as perfect as I can so that the winner ends up with a truly unique and special HAMB-worthy reminder of their generous contribution to a place that I personally hold pretty dear!

I have NO idea what it'll actually be WORTH, as I can't begin to put a price on my work...but I hope it will generate enough interest to drum up a respectable amount for Ryan, in return for all the time I spend here!

Like Ryan said...this is supposed to be FUN, and I truly enjoy the time I spend here, and will be happy to give something back! You don't NEED to contribute a penny if you don't wish too...this all VOLUNTARY, people! I just think it's a cool gesture to offer up something to show appreciation for what we have here, and I don't mind doing it when I can!

That said, I'm currently struggling dollar-to-dollar in a shit economy and non-existant job market...but I try to hold my head up and think positive...and the people here and the Good Times we share go a LONG way towards helping me to do so! I can handle the bad times in my life if there are good people to talk to and lift my spirits...why I often liken this place to therapy for myself! I get the biggest lift from the simple sharing of ideas, offering of technical help, or the endless good-natured jabs we take at one another! The get-togethers and events are INCREDIBLY good morale-boosters, and I enjoy the heck out every moment I get to spend with HAMB brothers and sisters...on-line or in person!

The drama and negative bullshit are a REAL downer, but the good times and good people here FAR outweigh it...hopefully it STAYS that way for a long time to come!

Look for Hack Auction #2 in the near future...I feel confident saying it's gonna knock your socks off!!!

    Carry on! [IMG]

  26. I know what it is, I know what it is...

And I hope bidding doesn't go too high, I want it! [IMG]

Marcus, if you want to raffle something "go head on" then donate the money to Ryan. The value of something, anything is as such "it is only worth what someone is willing to pay". The prices in the auction get high but guess what bubba thats the nature of auctions you win some you lose some. More power to those who can afford the higher priced stuff, it keeps Ryan from having to pull from his pocket so that we can come here, get good information, entertainment, and listen to you bitch.
