I've never seen the "Halon-type" at Lowes or Home Depot, especially for 20 bucks. Dry (powder) chemical might put out a fire if you can get to the source, but "Halon" replaces the oxygen which extinguishes the fire without coating your engine and wiring in a highly corrosive chemical. Naturally, the smart thing to have is small jets already mounted in the engine compartment connected to a good extinguisher in the cab like most race cars have. How much time would you have (or opportunity) to unlatch a hood release in order to get at a fire? I guess those little ones are better than nothing, but you get what you pay for.
