buzzard's '58 more-door is EXACTLY the direction I'm heading with my '57 Poncho. Damn, I'm gonna have to get over my fear of whacking the door handles off. That is so smooth and perfect with the Watson-style scallops.

WOW, glassguy that is a sweet set-up! my family grew out of my coupe and so I had to get something as well.. My choice was a 32 Tudor, wife digs it and the kids too!!

  4. This is a HAMB friendly family car, just needs a little work.

Here is a very rough but virtually complete 40 Ford tudor sedan with a clear NC title and complete 2-speed Columbia rear with all the controls. The original engine, transmission, and radiator are still in the car. Body is rusty but fixable if you can do it yourself. Fenders are all very fixable. Grille is undamaged.

I just bought a running, fairly solid '58 Olds 88 4-door hardtop (no post) and I think it offers a sweet combo of room and looks. I was going to try for a fairlane of the same vintage, but I'm not real fond of the 4 door's looks. Besides, the Olds was $875 complete with a decent interior (perfect seats) and nice chrome, though I need to patch a few holes in the body. Overall, I think the non-chevy GM cars of that era offer a good balance of room, looks, affordability, and parts availability.

The other great thing about the Olds is answering the time-honored question - 'What year is that Cadillac? - even though it says O L D S M O B I L E big as shit across the front...

  9. A wagon is the obvious choice, but a early Suburban wouldn't be bad either. Get a mid sixties Sub, bolt in the front suspension out of a '70's Chevy truck [disk brakes are nice in a family car], lower it a bit and you're good to go.

Well,I'm going to be a stinker.Every one of those big old cars suggested are really great. I grew up riding around in my Dad's big Oldsmobiles and they were tanks. All that being said,if my three girls were still really small,I'd go for safety over coolness.

My girls are all in their 20's but if I were you I'd be looking for the safest, most efficient cars on the road. Side air bags,roll-over and crash safety, all wheel drive. For my money that would be a Subaru Legacy wagon(made in America) or a Volvo station wagon. They're too many idots out there on the highways to ever compromise the safety of my family for style.

I know this ain't HAMB politically correct-I do drive a 13 year old car to work and a 350 Model A,but not with my family.
