got bored so did a little cover design work...I come from the school of minimalist thinking and design so... I borrowed an image from the "cool shop scenes" thread, hope the owner doesn't mind.
I don't get it. Books are static and great for information that doesn't change or develop (like what you find in the Green Bible for example). The web is dynamic and the beauty of it is that the collective knowledge grows/changes/develops quickly. I have a wall full of books. Some deal with hot rod construction, but only a very few are truly timeless like Bishop-Tardel or contain information that I can't get on the web. As soon as you pick what you consider to be your state-of-the art HAMB entries, they will be obsoleted by something better. Good luck - if you want it bad enough, you can make it happen. Have you contacted Ryan about this project yet? It's not going to happen without him.
How about an initial book with yearly inserts to bring everything up to date. Print it in 3 ring notebook style and all you would have to do is just insert the updates in the proper headings every year to keep it current. Frank
I don't know if this thing will happen or even needs to happen. I just thought it was a good idea. I love physical objects like books, for some reason it feels easier to understand information when I am getting it from a book...don't ask me why, because i have no answer for that, it is just how i am personally. See the tiny volume one in the top left corner of the cover a symbol of expansion and things to follow, like revisions, new ways of doing things etc. That being said, a good tech article is a good tech article no matter what the next guy is doing. Just because a new way of say building a frame rail (for a poor example) comes along, doesn't mean the previous way is inferior, you know. Im still bored interior page.
I think maybe someone should ask the boss what he thinks of the idea. all the conjecture in the world is useless without Ryan's approval.
Your right Zman. Ryan is this possible? I would like to have one . Hell I might even have to figure out something cool to build and do***ent for it.
Granted you can get alot of the info on how to's from the internet....but (idunno about you) But I cannot take the internet into the john with me...that's where I do most my reading! I also don't have the internet out in the garage. The idea of having all this great info in a solid book that you can take with you is great...Not too mention the amount of info that is lost everytime one of the old school hot rodders p*** on....The book would really be worth its weight in gold especially if it is (like said in another post) updatable 3 ring binder form....Just my .02
I started one a couple years ago. When a flathead article came up I liked, printed it and put it in a 3 ring binder.
Been printing stuff off of here since the day I first saw the HAMB...I like the book idea, too, but what I want/need to print and keep for reference may not be the same as anybody else..So even with a HAMB book,I'll still burn through those damn $30 printer cartridges often..] I'd still buy a book of HAMB tech stuff..There's always a big stack of car books beside my bed, and, so far,I don't sleep with my computer....
The 3-ring-binder format could be sold as a subscription, and updated on a whim. Hell, special edition pages could be printed... collect them, trade them, show your friends! ~Jason
