There is an occasional priblem that has cropped up for me and others doing relays. If someone is hauling for you for free, or for gas money, be a little considerate. We are generally on a time schedule of one type or another, so having the parts ready when we get there is always appreciated. Also, with things like engines or other hard to handle parts, fastening it to a pallet, so it is easily tied down, helps loading. A means of lifting it on the truck or trailer too. And with parts like windshields, or other gl***, packing is not my responsibility. I'll do my best, but unless you pack it good, there is no guarentee it's going to get there in one piece. If you have a car that will be loaded on a trailer, having air in the tires is a plus. Also some means of steering it. I wouldn't mention it, but I have picked up cars with no tie rods, with 4 flats, with the spindles welded, crooked at that. I've even has one with frozen brakes. This is all stuff you should take care of before I get there. Now if I know going in that there might be problems, that's ok, but I hate suprises like this.

Also, I am not doing this to make a living, so if someone has to crawl under the car, in the rain, in a muddy field, in the dark, it's going to be you. I'll be glad to do it for you, if you are prepared to pay me my regular rate.

Clear directions, and a contact number, on both ends, is a must. It took me 24 hours one time to get in touch with someone to deliver a car, this is totally unacceptable.

Now I'm not complaining. I enjoy meeting people, particularly HAMBers, and I learn from each one I meet. And this post was made because I have talked to other HAMBers who have had the same problems doing relays, I'm not the only one running into this.

By the way, I'm heading from NW Ohio to Las Vegas the first week of june, I'll have a car on the trailer, but there will be room on the truck. Return the last week of june.

Yep............I have been done a few and I have sent a glove box cover (worth alot on Epay) to the west coast to never be heard from again a couple of years back.........I kinda agree......I loaded a part a while back that was a heck of a deal and sent a tie down strap and a roll of duct tape to never hear for the guy in Texas again..........oh well........I think that the one that I loaded his truck with was the middle man.........

Hell, even if you're paying full price, people should do that. You wouldn't have the UPS guy waiting while you wrap the box up-no difference here.
Enjenjo, I'd suggest keeping this post and when you are PMing details back and forth, send them a copy of this. Might save ya the h***le down the road.

I'm going to totally agree with you Frank. I LOVE doing relays and helping fellow HAMB/RRT folks out but a relay person having to pack up stuff to get it ready to transport is totally unacceptable.

I'll add even one more suggestion. If the part is in a box or it's able to get labled somehow, it sure would be a good idea to put the receivers name on it, especially if it's going through a few people in a relay. I still have a flywheel on my back porch that someone, don't know who cuz it's not labled, was suppose to pick up over six months ago or so. Sure would like to let whoever it belongs to know its there but I have no clue who it belongs to nor can I remember who dropped it off.

Thanks again for posting this Frank. I'm sure folks will get some helpful hints from the post.

I hear you! I spent an hour and a half in Houston trying to get a ten dollar mirror to a guy.

He did not have time to meet us, but expected us to haul it around Texas.

Another guy(same mirror) wanted us to drive 90 miles out of our way to get to him.

I still have it. It is still ten dollars picked up at my liesure.

  7. BTW I will have some room on the truck for small parts going from Phoenix to Knoxville area on May 27th, I will be returning with an almost empty truck on June 10th. Contact no is 602 388 2579. I would appreciate whatever you can donate for gas. And I agree with Frank, I do not have the time to screw around waiting on someone.

This was a couple of mos before I joined ,but still a good Idea. I need a speedster moved from Il to Ga. It's a roller with help on both ends. Money involved, just not a buck a mile.
