So my neighbors son is starting to wrench which means i'm getting called over to help more frequently. He's a good kid ,single mom, dads out of the picture. He's working on a big ol 72 ford F250 4x4 with a 360cid and of course he had to yank its factory 2 barrel for a 4v. Now who am i to tell him that isn't wise. These are the same instincts we all had then and have to this day. So I went over to oversee and help out. He put in a carter, good reliable choice. He had the fuel line hooked up to the 3/8 vacuum outlet,,,hehe cute. but other than that she was ready to fire. Once it started up it idled great but when i throttled it the engine started surging. very consistently.. up down up down. I suspected vacuum leaks so i doused it with carb cleaner... no help. pulled carb to get a good look if secondaries were closed at idle. looked good. Now i'm starting to get nervous.. The thing is I'm better with 2 or 4 strombergs than one of these new fangled 4 barrels.. But I'm the gearhead of the valley. This is auto shop 101 so i'd better have the answer. I told him I'd be right back ran home and got on the Hamb. Searched engine surging and within seconds got the answer. Remove and plug the vacuum advance on the dizzy. Boom stopped surging and I look like a hero. Told him to drive it to Napa auto parts and get new vacuum advance unit... I'll be making a $ contribution to the hamb next pay period cuz this site is a great value
I'll second that. Excellent sharing knowledge and more. The kid likely could use a knowledgeable older guy friend. Good karma to you.
He'll probably remember that for the rest of his life! Hang out with him and take him to some shows with ya. Sent from my bag phone.
It's a big responsibility being the old guy. You have to have all the answers. On behalf of old guys everywhere...GOOD JOB!
So that is how my neighbor does it, he always goes to the bathroom when the going gets tough and comes back with answers . Now that I think about it, i do the same thing. This is an awesome forum Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Since the young man lacks the guidance of a paterfamilias I commend you for taking the time to offer your ***istance. I am sure you made a lasting impression on him. HRP
Seconded. Good on you! Nice to know when you're on the HAMB you're not only hanging out with knowledgable guys but good men (& women) too.
