Great time, proud of my little Willys made the 700+ mile round trip without a tragedy. I had a couple gremlins to get worked out and my front tires wore reallybad (allignment issues) getting that fixed as we speak. Got some bad gas orsomething along the way somewhre and really effected the blower etc, but all seems good now. Had a great traveling partner, with a VERY dependable little 40. Meet some new peaple, and shot the bull with some friends, Great food, weather, cars, etc. THANKS JAY!!! Nice homestead, soory I pussed out so early sat, I'll make it up at the drags. I'll post my pics a little later. Rusty.
he lost the crank pully, it snaped/sheered all the bolts at once and launched it into the great wild. nothing was seized up so im kinda figureing some thing ~maybe a br*** screw from one of the carbs~ droped down in there and locked the blower up for just a second before it p***ed threw the rotors. either way highboy32 and greezy went out in the 40 walking ditches, and after fighitng off copper heads and badgers found the glimering ilusive pulley. ~in the pic up there next to the vw hes putting the pull back on in the milkshake drivethrew parking lot
Yep, Jay's the man. It was a great weekend! The story of my blower pulley. We were heading back from Eskridge to the park for lunch and not all that far from getting there when I heard and felt a thunk at the front of the car. Looked in the rear view mirror in time to see something black flying through the air headed straigh toword the ditch. I looked at Travis with my, What the heck was that?" look and he said I had hit a bird. The car was still running fine and while I had not seen a bird incoming I figured, ok, fine and kept going. Made it to the park fine and as I was getting out somone (sorry, can't remember who you were) asked me if I had had some problems and looked at the engine. All the pulleys on the crank were gone. and the belts were hanging limp :-( The air that had been coming through the radiator had kept the water pump spinning (try that with an electric fan) so there had been no overheating. It was amazing that it didn't take anything else with it. There are a series of dings on the back edge of the fan ast the fan hit it on the way out but that's it. Five of the allen head cap screws broke near the head and screwed out by hand. The fifth broke just inside the balancer and didn't want to come out. Pictures were taken by a number of other guys so I figure they'll pop up here shortly. Looking at it, all six bolts into the balancer were broken off clean. No signs of previous failure. I had been cruising along at an even 2000 rpm. There seems to be no good reason for the failure. Kind of discouraging but I figured here I am on a nice day with my hot rod brethren. I couldn't remember quite where we had been when it left the car and figured it would probably be sitting at the bottom of a muddy puddle. I was not going to let it wreck the day so I wrote it off, started figuring out a replacement, and proceded to enjoy myself. Troy (Greezy) had another plan. He had been in front of me and Jeff (Highboy32) had been behind me. The two of them snuck off and went looking for the pulleys. They got in the rough area and walked a lot of ditch encountering several live natives I'll let him describe. :-D I was talking with Kevin when they got back with the prize! Made my day!!! God bless my Vagabond brothers!!! Kinda ended my social time for a bit as it was 4:20 and stores were going to be closing. I headed off to a farm supply place. Got the allen head bolts I needed and a small mirror and had it on but not tightened all the way down when I got chased out of their parking lot so they could lock it up. I headed over to the drive in where folks were hanging out and finished putting it back together... with an audience. Then back to Jay's for more food and fun. Pretty amazing that there was no real damage and more amazing that Troy and Jeff found the pulley. You guys are rulers!!! Good times all the way around.
