Too bad we didn't have H.A.M.B. and H.A.M.B. buddies back then, more cars AVAILABLE to work on ...... with much less rust.

'50-'60's gr*** roots Rock & Roll and street corner harmony? Now that's what Im talkin' about. Listened to it every day on the AM radio.
I'm thankful to those who have digitally remastered this wonderful genre that takes me back to my youth whenever I want and for preserving it for future generations to enjoy as the artists who made it happen p*** from this earth it seems almost on a daily basis .

Yep those were the best days ever, when I was a young teen living in East L.A. I had a crystal set radio and after lights out I would listen to ' Old H.H. Hunter Hand**** ' playing all the great R. & B. songs

Then fast forward 10 yrs and we would pop over the hill to the Wiskey a Go Go and have a drink and watch a young Johny Rivers, then on the way home go to the Crossbow in Van Nuys and see Glen Campbell

Just like all of us I remember it like it was yesterday ' Priceless '

When one of those slow belly rubbing songs comes on I still want to get up and slow dance !!!!!!!!!!

Either you're not sufficiently long enough in the tooth to have experienced it all first hand or you're at the wrong car shows

My dad was ALWAYS singing Doo Wop songs thru' the house when I was growing up! He couldn't sing a lick if his life depended on it, but that never stopped him. His favorite groups were "The Crecendoes: 'Oh Julie' from 1957" and "The Fireflies: You were mine (1959)".....he would grab my mothers broom out of the closet or mop out of a bucket and sing to my mother all the time, whether she was glad or not:p....totally in the way, tripping over things...singing like he was a real star with a group singing backup! He loved his hot rods, and his music....we'd drive around in his 31' Ford coupe and he'd turn the radio up loud, and spin tires at every stop light...singing as we rode along to the radio....I was always impressed with his ''style'' ....he left me with a wonderful legacy, of hot rods and Doo Wop music....Thanks Dad.....and the legacy continues still! 073.jpg

One of my all-time favorites featuring the late Lynne Nixon.

  12. Her name was Lynne Nixon, and I agree, her voice was stunning, made the hair on your neck stand up.
She died in 2001, never read a cause, but just short of her 60th birthday.

In my neck of the paved roads, we get the show that Bob was talking about on a monthly basis on our PBS. We get all of the Doo Wop, British Invasion, Early Rock and Roll and so on. It's not the infomercials but the real shows. Saturday was 70's Disco hosted by KC and The Sunshine Band. SoCal is loaded with the music.

  17. One of my favorites. A Doo Wop version of " Over the Rainbow".
Maybe I'm being blasphemous, but I like it better than Judy Garland's version

I may be too young to have been there, but I appreciate all you oldsters posting your memories in this thread. I'm loving the introduction to some of the musicians I never heard before. Oddly, despite my diapers, I love listening to period music when I drive my toys.

Fantastic! It always amazes me how our various English regional dialects disappear almost entirely when we sing. No doubt those guys are Brits when they banter in the beginning. But when they start singing, they could be from Michigan, New York or California . . . or maybe even New Zealand.

Its funny cause ive always been 60 years out of date according to my friends. I can't stand modern music and theres nothing like driving around in your 50's 60's hot rod or custom and listening to music that my dad used to listen to on the wolf man jack show back in the day. Its like getting into a time machine right up until you get cut off by a Prius, haha.

    Hello,

Back in those early preteen days, we use to gather in this cellar of this old building near downtown Long Beach. Upstairs were several “older folks” meetings and we were not allowed to stay home by ourselves. Yes, we were dragged to these events regularly despite the protests. So, to make time go by we (several friends that also got dragged there under protest) tried our best to sing our favorite songs. Great Pretender, Earth Angel, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, In The Still Of The Night…when one of the local girls got dragged to the meetings, she could play the piano to accompany our awful singing. Not just listening to me plunk out a few basic rhythm and blues chords on the keys. Like the lead in to “In The Still Of The Night…”

Being that we were just developing our voices from squeeky high to odd ball low, we tried our best to make some harmonic tunes. Sometimes, my voice was high and during these changing times, shift to a lower tone without me doing anything. It was a strange time. But, we loved singing in that cellar. It made a hollow chamber sound as there was very little furniture in there besides a couch, piano, several chairs and a few tables. There was also a refrigerator. We brought our snacks to share and of course, there was a ****py plug in radio. The sounds were terrible, but at the time, we thought it was great to listen and sing along pretending to be the groups we heard on the radio stations.

The cellar was down a long set of stairs. With the door closed, the radio songs blasting, and us singing our hearts out, did not bother the adults in the upstairs meetings. We had a blast and did not mind being dragged to these gatherings. Friends, food, Cokes, and if we did get bored, there was a bowling alley just a few door down the block. Great times to be a kid…

One time we did get bored and went outside to try our best at hot wiring one of our older friend’s car. We were successful on a few occasions using the foil from our Juicy Fruit gum. The wires were just attached to the rear of the ignition switch and easily shorted out correctly to start.

I grew up in the late 60's-70's, but listen almost exclusively to 50's music. Doowop was my favorite genre! Luckily for me, and my friends, there were still lots of local DooWop groups singing in the local bars, and clubs. Some had members of old hit groups, some just local guys and gals. I still like to listen to the purity of the music and harmony of the voices, especially in the shop, when working on something that needs calm and concentration. I picked up all 3 of the Rhino DooWop cd collections, and play them in the garage.

Literally some of my earliest memories are sitting there listening to him on my little radio at night. I can hear him in my mind howling clear as day.

  30. Watch American Graffiti, you'll get a pretty close idea as to how it was back then.
No Prius seen in the movie, either. LOL.
But there is an airplane, at the end of the movie, that states its "radar equipped".
    Must be a "traditional" plane.
