Lived in Iowa till 91', KC area 91-04', came back to Iowa in 04' and plan to stay unless something better comes along. Iowa traditionally has had three major exports, crops, livestock, and talented young people. It's called the brain drain. Most of our legislatures are too busy sucking up to the seniors and trying to get another farm subsidy out of Washington to worry about retaining the youth. No disrespect to our seniors but if all the youth leave there won't be a population to worry about someday. I’m happy to be back, Iowa is a great place to live.

Born and raised in Denison, Hiway 30 ran right thru the town...moved to Fremont, NE after graduation, art school in Omaha and then to Denver, ColoRODo, in 1966...been here ever since. Iowa is a nice place to visit, once in a while, but I don't think I'd ever move back there.

I grew up in Northwest Iowa, in a little town called Ida Grove. After my time in the Army I can back to get my Degree from the University of Iowa. I had every intention of getting my degree and and then being part of the Brain Drain. Oops, got married, had kids, I'll be here for a long time :) No complaints though, Des Moines and the surrounding area is great. It still has that small town feel.

Maybe we should have an Iowa Hamb get together at Porky's in Des Moines or ?? Just a thought.

  13. That's because Illinois sucks. Oh, and if that smell is foul, it's coming from Iowa City. ;)

  16. Ida Grove? Hey, I'm a gradgy-ate of the fine institution of Lawton-Bronson HS. I'm also an alum of UI, where I frequently got my brain drained at the College Street bars.

Since then: SoCal, Gainesville Florida, Austin Texas, ChiTown. Doesn't matter where you go in this world, there are alway a slew of Hawkeye fans nearby.

BTW - did you hear they discovered a new use for sheep in Ames? Wool.

Born and raised in Iowa City and lived there until '92! :) I'm not even going to say go Hawks, because honestly... I'm on the HAMB for hot rods... not sports...

Now my Dad on the other hand (U of I grad and die hard Hawks fan) is on this planet just to follow the Hawks instead of working on the '35 coupe we have... what a shame. Priorities...

  18. Gentlemen, aren't we awfuly testy today!!!:D

If I could get full custody of the kids from the ex and make a living there, I'd consider Iowa in a heartbeat. Illinois is not my favorite place to be, in fact, I'm growing to hate this part of the state more and more as each year passes. Corrupt goevernment, Toll Authority, traffic, pollution, constant road construction, cost of living, housing expense - ARRRRGGGHH!!!

I was of course, when I made my odiferous comments, refering to your plethora of hog farms!! I love a good ham or chop very now and again but admit it - hog farms are pungent to say the least.

Please pass the bacon!!! Hhhhmmmmm - bacon *drool drool*

  19. Some of the Iowania I miss:

Maid Rite, pork tenderloins, Scoopin' the Loop in Sioux City, Okoboji, Knoxville Nats, Wells Blue Bunny, Kinnick Saturdays, RAGBRAI, tractor pulls, Bing bars.

Fond memories of the Woodbury County Fair pie auction... girls would parade their pies, one by one, then bidding would begin. High bidder got a kiss from the girl, then got to eat her pie. Mmmmm, pie.

Maid Rite!!!!! YES!!! I miss that place a ton! Nothing like! No imitation holds a candle!

I think in general I just miss hard working, ethically sound people (except for certain groups/types of people we mention to avoid closing this thread). Say what you will about Midwest people, but they are good people! I've lived enough places to know... Vegas pretty much solidified the theory too!

Born in Glenwood, living in Des Moines currently. I was really shocked to find out how much Des Moines is just like a bunch of small towns stuck together. I'll be here for at least another couple of years as I have a High School Junior that I wouldn't uproot for any amount of money.

    Warning: OT Iowaegian information follows

Our Maid Rite, the oldest continually operated and family owned in the nation (1928 or so), recently sold out. They now serve Ketchup!

Creating quite an uproar in this town. Ketchup on a Maid Rite is sacreligious!

;lakjsdfa;lsdkj!!! That sucks! My family actually has roots in the company recipes. :( Seems nothing is sacred anymore! I guess I never realized they didn't serve Ketchup though... Been years since I've been to one though. The last one I went to was in Muscatine I think.

That's something else I forgot to comment on... pork, breaded tenderloins! Holy crap those are good! I've got four in my freezer I'm saving for a rainy day. My Aunt comes out to visit every now and then and brings us some.

    Well now I'm hungry!!

I was served the best "pork chop on a stick" money can buy yesterday at the state fair pork producers building. I was waited on by the prettiest young lady I've seen in a long while. She had a banner across her dress labeled "Iowa State Pork Queen". I didn't have the heart to tell her that she better keep it to herself if she ever left the state.

I'm from Winterset, home of the Covered Bridges and John Wayne's Birthplace. 35 miles SW of Des Moines. I would be up for meeting some local HAMBers.
