Here's one of a pair of signs from an old Drive-In theater here in Osakis,MN...the other one points the other direction and says "One Mile" at the bottom...got 'em from a garage sale for $2 each...the centers of the letters are reflective tape...

Here's one I liberated from a garage at a house I was renting, some moron was using it as a shelf (it had 90 degree brackets on the back of it originally, painted the same red as the sign)...I believe it's a 30's Standard Oil sign, and this sign was the basis of my now defunct Standard Speedshop (while I was hanging the sign in my shop I was trying to think of what to call my new business and it hit me, the sign that is, right on top of the head...and THEN it hit me inside the head...Standard Speedshop!)...

  6. I would think there's good money in re-creating old signs.

It is not all vinyl out there!

Some of my friends are pro sign painters. They stripe too! Got to give them a plug.

I believe that they will go anywhere in the west. Their work it top notch!

  12. I started painting signs in the mid 1970's before I was striping. Painting signs taught me how to handle the brush. Wasn't very good at signwork but persistence led to a sign company doing billboards (Did many repaints/rebuilds for Hi-Lo auto parts around Texas when they had red/white 12x36 billboards then we changed them to yellow/ black)) did many signs in refineries, heli-pads on offshore rigs, hundreds of car show boards, too many 4x8's, windows, windshields on used cars, lot's of truck and race car lettering, etc. I never was as good as the old pros but signs fed the kids when striping got slow. Never have used vinyl and never will.

Wow......you've been around the block. I started in the late 80's, specializing in vehicles. The computer was just coming into play...... I was not dyed in the wool painter yet so I learned to accept this new tool. A lot of the old timers hate the computer, I feel it hurt the business more than helped. The computer allowed about 90% of sign busineses to BE, and without the computer they wouldn't be there, which means the computer has created 90% of my competition that shouldn't be in business. I guess this is what people dealt with during the industrial revolution. Best of luck.........

  24. Had many pics of my work in albums until my new truck got stolen in 2002. When the cops found it everything was gone including the pics.

Here's few from years ago, my old Pintriping logo on a sign for car shows, one of 32 offshore helipads I did to spec, not fancy but paid $6500 each and took about a day and a half to do by myself. My 86 Astro after I lowered and painted it. Nowadays people use vinyl on everything. I guess thats why I don't do too many sign anymore.

neatstuff for sure.. i'm a sign painter-by-trade and i can see the difference between the old school way and the way things are produced today at the shop i work at, the letters are either vinyl decals or screen printed. very little is even done "by hand" anymore. there's a nostalgic look and feel to the signs painted by hand, you can just tell that they have something that's not attainable through vinyl or screen print. i would cal it the artists "signature" the way he holds the brush and fills in script. each is different and unique.

  26. Nice work Big Block. Yep, I've done many signs in every condition known to man. When you have 3 kids and wife at home (they're all grown now), you gotta hustle no matter what stands in yo way.

Never felt that I was pro sign painter but I faked it pretty good. Sometime I miss the days of doing them but health issues (Diabetes kickin my butt) keeps me from hangin' off ladders. I've gotten to the point where if it's heavier than a striping brush, I won't do it.

Safariknut - I envy your style.
Skeesix - Thanks for the info
    edwierdo - Neato stuff, man.

Big applause to all you sign artists who keep the sign wine flowing. (I thought all sign painter were wino's!?)

Very good stuff Mikey.......you did good impersonating a pro...ha ha ha..... I know your feelings exactly. I've been dealing with old sports injuries, injuries from car accident, health issues and a heavy string of bad luck. I did very little work outside my shop. I had two boat yards and occassionally a private boat too big to bring to shop. That's all gone now, I'm starting all over, I'ts my love and interest in what I do and a bunch of just being plain stubborn. I'm limited in what I can do now, but can still do stuff without climbing. I'll leave that to the kids.....I wish you luck...keep having fun............Bill
