WOW! I had heard about this "through the grapevine", but I had no idea it was THIS serious! This will probably be a huge 5 page thread I'm guessing.....

  3. I'm glad all mine are real steal cars, no repop stuff here. Although I do like the looks of some of them they are not all 1932 FORDS no matter what they look like they are just not from 1932.

Yeah, it already has started - it was touched on in a thread by RF here:

    Big Brother Thread

I see both sides of this & the sad part is, rodders will end up lumped in with the kit-car industry...

Did you read the article, at least 4 other states are doing similiar raids. I had a hell of a time with the DMV when my parents sold me their jeep for $100. The tranny was bad and that's all the junkyard offered them, so that's what they charged me. The DMV wanted me to pay the taxes on the full value of one in good condition! Now I'm worried about what to do when I finally get the plymouth on the road. I only paid $400 for it, and am using 90% junkyard parts. Are they going to try to get me to pay taxes on a "restored classic"?

Here in Ontario, (canada) the Gov. came up with "valuing" cars. Even if you get the car for free you have to pay "book value" taxes on it!!! There are a FEW ways (like a "direct" relative) etc but you still have to sign a waiver and they still warn you that they may audit you!!!

Big Brotherism is a desease and they're drunk on power.

Governments, all of them, are just the biggest GANG in town.
    Understand that...
Just like other gangs or mafias, they want their "cut" of every business and business transaction in their "hood" they can get their hands on.
The only reason they don't tax or collect fees on every exchange of corporate stock is because the guys who are buying most of that are the ones running the gang.

That's about the time I'd say "If you think it's worth that much you either buy it from me right now for that amount or find a licensed car buyer willing to buy it for that much today"
A car's only worth what you can sell it for.
They know that and I suspect somewhere in the fine print of their laws that it states that in cases of value arbitration.

    Here in Sweden
If you have a document (pink slip) showing that the car has been registred in Sweden sometime. You can get it registred, at a low cost. 150$
But you can onky change front and rear axle and driveline. Or if you want to swap the body you have to leave the frame axles and driveline original. I know there is discussion,s that as long you hava a frame with pink slip you can change everything.

Or you can register it as an Amateur built vehicle, then you can build it from scratch. paying around 1000$ as a environment fee if you dont have a catalysator on the engine. Then you have to have the car inspected once when you build it and then one more time before you get show it for the goverment inspection.

An other way to do it if you build up a car from original parts you can get it registred as an old vehicle if you dont change to much.

And if you have a car older than 1951 you dont have to pay any road tax, and dont have to do the yearly carinspection.

So i guess we have it better than the California guys, just now :)

you said it Jeem...sounds pretty crazy... Is this part because of the Governator? Can only hope this crazy BS doesn't spread throughout the country... Someday there is gonna be a big ass revolt, take away the rights of Old Car enthusiasts and gun owners and its gonna hit the fan sooner or later...

I agree with Dr J. Last year I did not cut the grass at a house that was owened by my late parents. I had the local city police come to my house with flak jackets guns drawn with back up to serve a warrant for the grass and a automobile with out current tags and 2 flat tires. When I asked the police why all the force I was told that because I had a gun permit the decided to do it that way to be safe. When I asked why he did not bust the crack house by my shop I was maced and put in a patrol car. later turned loose. I went to internal affairs. what a F@#king joke because boy o boy that blue line sticks together. and the police wonder why no one has respect for them. Sorry for the rant. I guess the Alabama title busisness will slow down a little now..

On Wednesday the 6th of October, 22 law enforcement agents and other individuals from the State of California, Department of Justice Fraud Division, Department of Motor Vehicles, California Highway Patrol, Department of Automotive Repair and others arrived with guns drawn and flak vests on at the shop of Boyd Coddington Hot Rods & Collectibles (La Habra, California).

    [/ QUOTE ]

What the hell is the 'Department of Automotive Repair'?? 'Flak vests'? did they airdrop in while getting shot at with anti-aircraft fire? I'd most likely think that the local cops provided the muscle for the DOJ, and representatives from the DMV and other paper pushing agencies. Nothing like the People's Republic of California [IMG]

All jokin`aside, this is real bad news and like one of the posters said, what you Californicators get today, we get tomorrow(the bad stuff anyhow).I can see that tax grabbing SOB Blair writing up the new laws this weekend.I argued that this high visabilaty T,V shit would cause trouble and get people taking an interest in something they never even knew existed.

Condolences from "The Land Of The Fee"

I don't get this, what happens if you buy a car that is not running and needs a ton of work for say 4000 bucks and you spend some time working on it and put say 30000 into it. Do they say you have to go back and pay the difference once they see how it looks today?

  27. what happened to the recent ruling in california allowing repro cars to be registered as what they represent? also aren't boyds cars built for far more than they can be resold for? if so what are they really worth and what should they be taxed for, what they cost or what they are "valued" at????????

After reading that article...it does not sound good for anyone that's building a car, be it real steel or fiberglass, that does not have the original title to the car. Or even anyone that's planning on transferring a title on an old car in the future.

Can you imagine what kind of hassle it could get to be if you have to prove what your car is worth (or not worth) every time you go to transfer a title?

If you think you are immune because you don't live in California, you are wrong. It's as simple as that. Other states routinely follow California's lead, especially when it's something that can be viewed as a "money making opportunity" by tax assesors and collectors.

What really bothers me is that they say that this has "COST" the state of California this much money, when in reality they never would have known they were missing anything if not for the investigation. I have a feeling that the cost of investigation and enforcement is going to equal or exceed what the State of California believes it is "owed."

The most important thing here is that they have the ability to charge you with a felony. That means jail time if you don't do things the way they want.

I hope SEMA is frothing at the mouth right now...they are really the only voice we have that the state and federal governments might listen to.

I have to agree...Big Brother sucks.
