The yellow Willys of Jack Coonrod from Vancouver Washington dated 1967.
Jack was part of the match race tours back then.

And I thought my 59' Volvo was a bit tight with a SBC! Fenderwell headers helped me a bunch but this car with Hemi has conventional headers running outside the frame (no choice at that engine width!). Would love to hear from anyone who knew anything about this car. Love it!

That's something that does look out of place with some of the new-school "faux-gassers" being built. Narrowed rearends didn't seem to be very common in the early Gas or Modified Production drag racing classes. So to me, if you build a car like that, drag slicks tucked into un-cut/non-radiused rear wheel wells remind me of an O/T pro street car with air shocks....
    They just look wrong.
    Right? ;)
    Or, maybe I'm wrong.....?

I think that is correct. There is a nostalgic look to tires hanging out side the fenders on vintage race cars. On a camaro, ick. On a 55 chevy, cool.

A couple of streeters from my local club in the 70's.

This '40 Chev had just enough rear tire tread showing to let you know it meant business!

And this deuce 5-window was built by my brother in law; as far as I know it's still on the road. It now sports a different paint scheme and newer wheels.... and yeah, those new wheels tuck the tires under the fenders.

Weren't radiused rear wheel openings a factory option on big-block equipped 1955 Chevys...?? :D

This cracks me up. Somewhere there are Corvette purists who have seen this picture and have been outraged or cried. Even better if they've done both at the same time;).

It was a RACE CAR. What ever had to be done to be competitive.
