It's interesting. The 503 was an upgrade and replacement over the 426 inline 6 used in the 40's. I wonder how many parts the 426 g***er shared with the 6-71 Diesel since they had the exact same bore and stroke and the gas 426 was released to the public in 1939, one year after the 6-71? Probably not many since a 2 stroke diesel is a completely different animal, but it is still a fun thought experiment to put oneself in the shoes of those engine designers and wonder what you would do given the opportunity.
