Ever feel like your just spinning your tires and not really getting anywhere?

I opted to stay home from the garage today and spend some time with my girlfriend and accomplish some housework. We slept late, went out to lunch, got her car washed, did come laundry, and cleaned the whole house; but now it's 4:30 and I'm sitting here thinking of the customer car I could have been working on today which would've brought me one day closer to working on my own personal car for once.

I've had my '51 Ford for alost 2 years now and have gotten almost nothing done. I think I may even be going backwards. I've had big plans for this car even before I owned it and it just seems like they may never come true. Everyone gives me advice and tells me to hold off on taking in customer work and get going on my stuff, but once I get some time to do that I feel like I've run out of motivation for my own stuff because I've used it all up on everyone elses.

I'm not really complaining so much as airing my frusturation. I love doing what I do, it just seems that I may never get to roll my car out of the booth and debut it.

Thats it, rant over. Thanks for listening.

Bill, Sounds like an earlier chapter of my own life. While the kids were growing up, I worked full in the mining industry, painted on the side, bought and sold cars for income, and tried to find time for my own projects.

Eventually, the kids grew up and left, I did not need the extra income from car sales, and I established enough business, that I went full-time. A few years ago I bought a new project, but over the next year, could not find the time to go get it.

I eventually realized that I loved building them, but did not want to spend all of my time cruising. In other words, I was a better builder, than owner.

Today I just paint 7 days a week, and get my kicks and ego-boost through customer projects, instead of my own cars (and I get to do my favorite part, without the stuff I hated!). My spare time is with family, and at automotive events. Life is good.

BTW, today I had dinner with Mama, talked to the family, and now I'm sketching up paint ideas for the latest project....so this Sunday is not a waste. :)

Right on. I'm sure it will all work itself out as it did for you. But I'm stuck in the middle. I love trying new things on customer cars, things I may never get to do for myself. For instance, I have a '51 Merc coming in soon that needs the chop fixed and finished. I'll probably never own a chopped '51 Merc (someone in Jersey seems to buy every single one within 500 miles that is in any way decent...) but now I at least get to play around with one. However, I also dig the rush of crusing down the freeway in one as well.

Just like you I skip the whole get it to run and all the mechanicals aspect that just takes time, and go right to the make it pretty stage. I'm all about that. But thats the stage I'm stuck in right now with my '51. Once its time for the body, that will fly I'm sure. I just need something to get my *** in gear. Time being one of them.

Sometimes thou a break will help clear your mind and you will see productivity increase bigtime when you get back to work. I've got plenty of my own projects but the last time I worked on any of them was at least 4 years ago so I know what you mean.

Yep, a waste! I just decided to get as much done on my Goat shelter, And work on the fence some more. Haven't worked on any of my projects since October:(. Just another Sunday to me.

  17. Long story but I lucked out for once and we didn't have to do any family stuff this Easter, so I got right to work early this morning. Got my straight axle ***embly all mounted back up on the car, mounted up the Moon fuel tank, painted my firewall, got the front wheels/tires ready for mounting tomorrow, wet sanded a little and clear coated the back half of the car (rattle can :D)......I was moving like a Hummingbird on crack.

my 49 i chopped last year is still sitting in the same spot just as i left it over a year ago. meanwhile since spring is springing, i am out in the yard working on it to get it ready for the season. add me painting the fence and fixing to start painting the outside of the house, shop, and utility shed so my days are pretty much spoken for at least for the next couple of months, and i am retired!!

right on bro! but i always tell myself that you have to make it, before you can spend it! the customers finance our own projects. without them, we would'nt have squat!

Think it's tough getting to your project with a girlfriend? Wait 'til you're married with kids. It will all get done in time, don't worry.

I spent the day with my kids, ate, talked and laughed, and remembered what Easter means to me and most Christians, seemed like I could take one day off for that. I guess it's a priority thing, but I feel great right now,:)

Oh no don't get me wrong, we had a great day and I definitely enjoyed not having to work. But the penalty for that was not getting any work done, so I guess its a catch 22. The point was more that I wasted the second half of the day not really doing anything because it was too late to get involved. I'll live.

Exactly, and thats how I rationalize it. Some days it gets me down though, other days not so much.

I got a chance to spend the day with my sister and her kids that live down state, my parrents that are 76 & 72, my wife of 31 years and my daughter and her son. We visited, ate, and played some games with the kids. As I grow older I find time spent with family is becoming more important every year. Dad is 76 and his health is weaking, we don't know how long he will be with us.

10 years ago I thought holidays were a waste of time also, but now I think differently. Cars will always be here, our family won't be. Five days to work on other peoples stuff is enough in a week. That gives you 1 day to spend with family, and 1 day to do your own thing. My dad told me that when I was a teenager, it took me 25 years to understand. The last few years have been the best years of my life. I've made a lot more money before, but had nothing to show for it. Started wondering why I was working myself to death. Work, cars, and things are not the answer, family, friends, and faith are.
