I have had my '63 Biscayne on the road for over four years now, and the darn trans has never worked quite right. Won't bore you all with the details, but it is a Saginaw 4 speed with 3.11 first gear. Engine is a warmed up .060 over 283. I LIKE THIS TRANSMISSION a lot.. so let's not get off on any tangents about transmissions.. Problem is that is just has never really shifted totally correct.. Had it out two times and replaced parts in it (not me, but local mechanic)....tried about every type of oil except BEER in it (from advise here and elsewhere) and still would want to hang up a bit going from 2nd to 3rd gear when it warmed up... Finally bit the bullet and bought a total rebuild (guaranteed) unit. Friend helped me put it in yesterday in his shop that has a hoist about 20 miles away, as it was ~34 degrees here and pretty dry roads. DamnDaddy...what a difference.. Slick as ****sky and totally different feel... Put about 35 miles on it and very very impressed. Funny when you are a Senior Citizen and on fixed income how you put up with these things. That little bit of spring yesterday was awesome...Now if we can just get rid of the balance of this ****py winter !!
Damn I never knew you were having problems with the ******. I like the Sag 4 speed or 3 and ran them a bunch way back when. You could have sent it to me and I would have got it straightened out for you. Sorry that I didn't know. Anyway you can't beat a sag when it is up in shape, enjoy it my friend.
Well at least you got it workin right finally! I like the Saginaw ******s too. Hell, the dirt oval fellas have been usin and abusin 'em for decades! Have you blown apart the trans that was giving you trouble and figured out what the problem was?
I ran a 3 speed in my '62 Street race belaire when I was a kid, I always kept a spare in the trunk. I would actually sell my spare and go to the wrecking yard and get another to go through, I only ever used my spare once on that car. I ran a sag 4 gear behind a 2x4 409 for quite a while, it was loose as a goose and it came apart on me, so I rebuilt it properly, never had a problem I with it ever again. They want to be kept in good shape, but truth be told anything we use should be kept in good shape shouldn't it.
