I have a Harbor Freight stud gun the gun works fine but the slide hammer puller is junk. It won't grab the studs has anyone found a reasonable slide hammer replacement?
It does if you handle it right. It has a small roller, it acts kinda like a clutch, the pins slid in very easily, but then you need to make sure that the roller rocks the other way to grab and lock the pin in place. Maybe a little working on the roller to loosen it in the housing to free its motion will help. Mike
After about a dozen studs my roller lost its serrations and will not hold Harbor does not have replacements.
I have a HF junk out let close by and consider almost anything they handle as throwaway. I do buy there, but no power tools, cutting tools, no hand tools & etc. Mostly zip ties when needed, gloves and so on. I went through (3) floor jacks, and various other items before learning a lesson. Don't blame me I was born Norwegian.
I've seen the slide hammer portion of the tool welded to a set of vise grips...seemed like a quick solution to the problem.
When I bought mine several years ago, I had the same problem and I took it back and the manager went in the back room and finally found one that worked. He said he went through 4 boxes before he found one. I friend of mine bought one and his works fine. I guess the 6 year old Chinese kid that normally makes them called in sick that day and his 5 year old replacement wasn't quite up to the task.
