I liked it just fine. I guess seeing a nailhead instead of a sbc on the first show helped a bit. I just don't know what people expected being a Hollywood produced t.v. show and all. I'm just glad we don't have to see the chick with the talons again.
I thought it was a good show, I expected some drama, its tv right? I really hope Littleman suceeds, his cars are bad ass. For what ever reason I expected Jimmy to be a jerk , but considering what they are doing I thought he did a good job. Hopefully in the next episode we get to see more building, maybe they can hire Evel for some guest directing and we can get a crazy-loud-tire smoking-surf music driving sequence.

I worked in a shop too...we had 1) the die hard that showed up every day on time and f**ked everything up he touched because he just didn't get "it", (he got fired.) 2) the dope head that just wouldn't show up randomly on occasion, (he stayed because his Dad was in good with my boss.) 3) two really suave womanizers who knew their s*it but showed up when it was "convenient" for them and they weren't in court, (they eventually quit.) and 4) the 16 year old idiot who swept up and came in after school that should NEVER be allowed to work on cars...much less drive them (he got fired eventually too.) ...and then...there was ME to clean all their s*it up! Between the boss and me, we kept the place going. I swear everyone else was just a liability. When I left there was one good body guy left, and my boss was doing the painting. Apparently, my boss wasn't the greatest interviewer... And people wonder why I left. The place closed up about 6 months after I quit. It wasn't dumbass little details either...it was other people not pulling their weight, or even showing up for work... period. $9.50 an hour wasn't enough to babysit grown adults when I was only 24 years old, (this is 1999 dollars) working part time during school, and I was more responsible than they were. Having to re-assemble a brand new wrecked car someone else took apart because they were too stoned to come in to work was always a highlight of my day (afternoon.) That would have rivaled any TLC show... BadBob- Not challenging you- just a chance to get in a little picture of what a real world shop can be like. Jimmy Shine was dealt a bad hand...they gave him a lot of fluff to start his show with...and piss people off that want to see cars and not fingernail trauma.
I just read the post above about Littleman and the hole and it just dawned on me who he was. So Shine talks to Littleman like he's a little kid and calls his techniques "crude"...."crude" has he ever seen Littleman's work? Geez, I can't believe that.
what the crap's up with 45 minutes of "...when's she gonna cut her nails" Crap! don't ask it's your freakin business!!! and I bet she asked pete to pay for the nails anyway!
O.C.C. is on before ,and after, it in Michigan. It looks like another drawn out (yawn) drama, but just like American Hot Rod I watch it for the cars and the actual work they perform....that is when they stop the drama long enough to actually work on them....Mike
Makes me wonder,if there was a camera in your garage, when you were building, whatever you have, would anybody want to watch you? I don't think so! Give the show a chance. All I read was fuck Boyd, billet POS,I hate Foose, etc, etc. Here's a show about what we build and what we like. All you guys have to say is bullshit? I've talked to Jimmy many times, seen some of his cars, and i'll say this. I'd take any of them. How about a little respect for one of ours. The difference between Jimmy and many of you guys is,he's got a show. There's plenty of guys on the HAMB,that build quality cars. But we will never see them on TV. Give it a chance. My opinion,of course!
Amen Brother!! But am I weird or is there anyone else whom wants to keep Mad Fabricators and The Hamb in the shadows and out of the mainstream. BTW...The term "Hot Rod" is about as over-used in our modern society as "Old Skool" JT
Why are you people so jealous? I thought the show was great. Jimmy was very easy on these people and made them feel welcome. You don't know what it is really like
Littleman rocks, I hope he's gonna "teach" Jimmy a couple of things. In Jimmy's defence, it's not easy beeing thrown into a TV format and be yourself, it will get better over time. I would not call Shine, the new Boyd yet.
I agree on the way Dave was going to cut the hole. But and that's a big But, it only needed to be a 2 not a 10. If I'm paying that kind of money, I want 10's, not 2's. Check out Troy Tapanga's ( I have no idea how to spell his name) cars, even the stuff no-one sees is top notch. I'll watch, it'll give me something to laugh about. Didn't Dave post about it and said it was a drama show?
Mercman, I was just relaying what the shop was like that I worked in. It's always hard to find guys with the same passion that you have. I just canned one of my best guys today. Why? Because he would suddenly get a headache after getting his paycheck. When the Ducks won,he came to work. When the Ducks lost,he wouldn't show up! There's drama wherever you work.
I dug it, but I do think Jimmy was being really overly nice about the newbies. I woulda fired all the smoke beakers and then been left with two epople. Wow, I just cut how much of the show out? C'mon though honestly? On your first day of a job who seriously steps out whenever the hell they want for a break? And as for Jimmy's big head? The guy deserves it. Look at his shit! In my head he is a true bad ass, and will be that way till he turns into a Boyd. I'd give my job up for a chance to work with him, and I damn well wont have to be shown how to weld or use a fucking grinder.
When I saw Littleman "teaching" the other two how he would use the hole saw I felt something would be said by Shine. I just think that Shine was not so subtly telling Dave that he is an apprentice there and Shine is the teacher- especially when Dave said he has done it like that a hundred times. Besides , I think if I did it Dave's way it for me would be alot safer and a more consistent circumference. Good Luck Littleman!!
It seems pretty formulaic so far,...Chapouris plays Boyd,..."I'm impressed with myself" Shine plays Dwayne and "fuck you, I'm not cutting my nails" Jezabel plays "fuck you, I ain't boxin' no frame" Bluebear,...
Hummmmm.... This show reminds me when I had apprentices at my old job. Trying to make money and train the new kid at the same time sucks. That's real life drama no matter how you stir it, and this show has just about nailed it. Yeah, you have the nail thing and what not, however I'd rather watch this show than a LONG list of other things on TV. For starters; Golf, Basketball, Football, Baseball, that Americian singer show, soap operas, oprah... My point is, I enjoyed it and I like the show... ...and I'm not easily entertained.
I don't know one person from the other on this show, as I've never known or met any of them, so I won't bash their talents and accomplishments. My take on it: A coattail show, riding on the wave that Monster Garage, American Hot Rod and American Chopper created, with a selection of more traditional cars casted because of the popularity and comeback of that type of car, as witnesses by what more and more magazines are putting on their pages. The girl with the nails was a prop. Do you really think that of all the candidates they looked at for this show, that she was one of the top 5? Get real. Purely hollywood drama. She would have never been allowed to set foot in any respectable shop to work, just on the basis of safety, let alone be allowed to perform any work. They wasted a good amount of time on her and that lame "nail" drama. So she's an artist and wants to learn about cars. [Gag] I can fart and shit but that doesn't mean I want to become a proctologist. The "might miss the deadline" crap was most likely known to the owner of the car ahead of time, along with the fact that 5 unknowns were working on his 6 figure car. I'll bet there was some costly gaurantees given to him in case of a mishap. Most of the work on that car was already done, except the glamour details. A $30,000 paint job? It'll be the best looking car in the trailer. So far it's been a hollywood hyped reality show, a dose of Super Nanny, shameless self promotion and you might as well have Angelina Jolie on there with that "save the poor kids" garbage. And the smoke break thing was garbage also. Were there no rules set down before the show was even started? Day 1 of the show?? All 3 would have been given their walking papers right then and there if it was my business. But no, the script says they have to be coddled and nurtured first so the drama can continue. Using Shine's own advice, it's either a 10 or a 2, and if it's up front where everyone can see it, it better be a 10. Sorry TLC/SoCal and Jimmy Shine, you scored a 2 with the first one, IMHO.
Ducks? How is that an excuse??? LOL... I was just trying to expand on your post. I wholeheartedly agree with you. You were not alone. There's "do" ers and then there's the "I don't feel like it" ers. If that makes sense...LOL... For me, it wasn't about passion, it was about a paycheck- AND DOING THE JOB RIGHT...to MY standards... as in- couldn't tell the car was ever wrecked. We were a production shop...Rebuilding wrecked '98 Neons and Full-size Dodge Trucks was a means to an end, and nothing more. The occasional "gravy" job classics that came in were few and far between. I still got burned out. I need one of those BLEUNAMI Burgurs right about now...
WOWZA I really liked it at first, then the drama set in and yes FINGERNAILS SUCK I can barely grow a single fingernail more than a 1/8" without it breaking or tearing... I have one freakin eye(yes Prosthetic and I do take it out and play tricks on people ), missing part of a toe, have smashed, cut open, ripped off FINGER NAILS all for the love of vehicles. Or maybe at some points it was sheer stupidity or by accident. hehe Anyhow If they need someone to replace her ass where the hell do I apply? I think WE ALL have had multiple injuries, and if someone is affraid to get hurt, they need not be ANYWHERE near machinery or a shop. Other than that I thought the show was pretty cool, I really dug some of the equipment, and the rides for sure. I think I would have used a Plasma cutter for the circle cut-out though, not a band saw Although that was cool trick
Chapouris built my all-time favourite car, a 34 Ford coupe named "The California Kid" in the early 70's and he has been producing quality work ever since. Shine is lucky to have the opportunity to work for him. Forget about the comparison to Boyd and Duhwayne, lets give Hard Shine a chance.
I liked the show alot. Too many commercials if ya ask me! But for the first episode it seemed kinda slow. Hopefully it'll pick up in the next episode, but I am very stoked to see what comes up because I like all of the So-Cal Shop cars. I say this will make for a damn good show.
Stevo came over, we fired up the big screen and we both agreed that the program was good. The series has hope. The one thing that we both hoped for and looks to be the case is that there is a larger emphasis on the cars and less on the drama. Ok, maybe not so on the drama, but the car focus outways that. And we both agreed that the chick with the Bruce Lee Press-on Nails should have been drug through the gutters of Pomona from the front bumper of the shop truck. Her sole purpose for being there was to get some face time on the tube. Sadly she achived her goal and at our expense. Dammit. Hopefully the remaining crew members have a little more charactor then that little priss. We know one of the four does; Dave, we love you! Simply put, I just got a new DVR and I'm glad I recorded it. Vance
Honestly,I didn't read this whole post. I did make a point to sit down and watch the show. And that I normally don't do. My.02,the TV formula was a bit lame. The artsy "interview" lighting was gay. I did enjoy seeing the old clips, and Jimmy and Pete came across well. ( i was a bit worried about that, because the ads were not that good) I felt funny telling me son I "know" littleman via the HAMB. As far as TV shows go,all make a point to sit down and watch it. So in TV world I guess it hit its mark. eric
