I am building a 50 merc hardtop. I want to do a set of windows like the hirohata merc but I want them to go down. Been doing some research everywhere but I cannot seem to find and build tech including photos on how they have done it. Below is an example of what I want...can anyone help guide me. Thanks

  2. there are a couple ways to go. both require getting the quarter glass forward to the door glass. I have extrusions of aluminum that are easy to form and will accept Ford or GM roof rails

lots of fun and a few different ways.. you can do it the Hirohata way, where the frame of the glass is stationary on the door and the glass rolls up and down within or have the chrome frame roll up and down with the glass like a stock hardtop is, the vent windows are fun to do also.. there is the easy way, having the door glass roll up into the original door top channel that you welded to the top, (but now you cant open the door when the glass is rolled up) or having the glass seal against a flange welded to the body like the 50 merc or screwed on (like the blue 40 merc) with with a seal installed. either way its a lot of work to get it to look and fit great...

thats is exactly what I am looking for slddnmatt, the blue merc, as I donnot have the vents either. do you have more details or a closeup of how the window sits? mayby the progress build of that one? where can we buy the window garnish and the flange or what was used to do it.
Thanks a bunch guys it is the help I was looking for!!

On the blue merc I fabbed the upper stainless seal trim from scratch to match the stock ones which I couldn't find. Since a 50 merc has the flange that sticks down that hold the stainless window trim you need to address this. on the 50 merc in the pics the piece was boxed in so i could still use the brass trim I make to surround the openings, but then a new flange must be made for a seal to be used. if you look at your doors to, the window opening is not inline with the vent window, the vent window turn inward from the division bar forward, so when you run 1 piece glass the the ouside will have a gap and the inside can get tight. something to keep in mind

The same applies at the B pillar, the door glass is not perfectly inline with the rear 1/4 window. Some times on a heavy chop this can give issues trying to get everything to line up and seal then still having the window roll up and down with no issues..

The window frames were made from 1/2 x 1/2 steel tube bent to the shape of the pattern of the openings and then the bottom was trimmed out to accomdate the glass. You want the frames to go all the way down and attach to the bottom piece that the door glass sits in, just like a original hardtop would. You will need the wider U channel fuzzies that the glass slides up and down in, which i believe the 50's chevy trucks use. I just buy it in lenths at my local upholstery store which if you need there info i could give ya.. if you need some pics of the 50 merc i can send you some. same concept as the 40 just more work since the 40 was originally a hardtop, so less mods to the body..

  6. those frames look great,

another option is tempered glass and no frames. I use 65-67 mustang roof rail rubber in polished aluminum channels. no way would I ride in a car that the doors wouldn't open in a power failure or accident
