That is great news! I've been wanting to go there even since seeing the Rod & Custom cover shot back in the early 90's. So when I heard about it getting knocked down, I thought so much for ever seeing it in person. Can't wait to see it revived! :)

Yeah!! It's official! Saw it in today's Long Beach Press Telegram. They even ran a pic of me and my Olds again.

A BIG tip of the Top Hat to Cyclone Kevin. Hard work and opitmism does pay off.

Count me in for any upcoming get-togethers.
Kevin and Burny and all the rest, too, are heros.
Gotta give to city council of Downey a few pats on the back, too.
This would not have happened if you all hadn't stepped up.

You know you can count me in!
Maybe they could do the carhop thing on Friday and Saturdays. I'm sure there wouldn't be as much carhop business during the week. I lived across the street for fifteen years and would go there all the time, especially on the Cruise nights.
    WAY TO GO KEVIN!!!!!!!

    Well John,
Now you & your boys will be able to enjoy in one of your cars. Drive In Service available soon! ;) I can't wait to eat a burger there again, I visted Toluca Lake Bob's & Pann's today, 2 very different sides of town traffic wise. In order to insure their livelyhood and survival, we have to support them.

Thanks guys for all of the kind words, I must say The Power of the HAMB is Immense!
Rebuild it & they will come!

This is whole reason why we worked so hard to save the Broiler, So future generations of Rod & Custom owners would have a place to hang with cars.
Glad to hear that it will be put to good use.
This is OUR Americana, If we love and appreciate it, we have to work to maintain it's existence.
    Thanx for caring.

    Hi Kevin,

thank you for all you have done. I left out my thanks in my post. Im realizing now sure were fantastic days in 89-90 when me and my family cruised there. It's great timing as I am getting back into this stuff again. Fantastic. Where's Randy Roubal soon again maybe it will be "time to get out your car entry tickets!"

Do you have any pix from this time? I used cruise there in my Chopped 30 Closed Cab Red w/ red oxide cab. I dug that time.

You inquired about Lee,He took over another cruise that I started in 1989-90 at the Sonic Drive In located in Azusa,That one packed em in. There was maybe 150 cars every Tuesday, then Thursday(It still lives as the Beachside Cafe cruise in Glendora off of Grand @ Arrow) when I ran it. He p***ed away from cancer in about 92-93,

You're welcome for last post re: the Thank you. We are still @ work on it and will do all we can to make this happen again in the most coolest of all ways. Drive In Style! "Remember if they build it they will come".;)

  20. CK...
    Funny thing...
before we married my wife grew up in the neighborhood close to Johnnie's and never visited. drove past it all the time on the way to other destinations.
Now we live near Bob's torrance and she LOVES it. Loves the Lions and Irwindale Tshirts (ask me about that connection sometime) and mentioned how COOL it would be if there were old cars there. (Cruise night anyone?)

    FFWD...
wife and sister in law are driving past Johnnie's the other day and commenting on what a shame it was that it was just sitting there all busted up...so i tells here the news and she goes APE!!!

guess i better get MY car going cause hers is almost there.

opening nite i'll be there with mom, dad, wife and family. i'm so stoked i could wet myself.

    THANKS AGAIN!

Thanks for the info......Yes I do have pics from the 89-90 cruises at Harvey's. Im going to be pulling some pics in the next few weeks. Unfortunately I moved four years ago...all my pics are in labeled envelopes but 1986 is mixed up with 89 and so forth. They are in storage. I had read very recently on the Johnie's site that Lee was gone. My brother remembered a few days ago he smoked.....sad and a fellow cruise enthusiast said he had other issues with the bottle. He was a great guy. Give me a few weeks as Im real busy with work, karting and gigs with 2 bands but I will get those pics in due course. One of my projects is to get all those pics back in order in proper boxes, because several times a year I need to get at them .

I knew that you would see this through and you know that out of everyone, I am the most proudest of your hard work and determination. It has been a really rough 15 months for us, but we did it and now we can enjoy the fruits of the labor. Now it's onto Norms! Lets not let this one go to the way side.

    Oh Meaty!
    U R 2 Much!
55 Dude, Man we have had a helluva time. Ghost cruises (Very Hard to put together but a whole lot of history as well as fun in the run) and all. We want this to this place to be able ito bring back many more GOOD memories for future generations.

The yearly smogs on early cars? The state needs to back off! This is a billion $ industry that is built up around these early cars-I have already put most of mine on non-ops so now the insurance doesn't get the money that they used to,nor does the state, the tire co's and especially the oil companies. I think that they are the most screwed of them all!.Trickle down economics.

    Weasel,
    hey thanx!=very cool!

    C-Deuced,
I know that I have put you through Hell with all of my time spent on this project, This is even worse than building a Rod!=Lol!
People we are losing more and more of these style/types of themed restaurants so C-Deuced is talking about a Norms Coffee Shop that I saw getting built being a Kindergartner-1st grader and riding the bus home from school in San Gabriel. All of the city of San Gabriel has changed so drastically,You'd never know that some of the most famous and infuential (Wally Parks,Bill Burke,Al Teague,Gale Banks and of course me=lol :) people came from there! It is very sad that is why I fight for this stuff. On the way from a club meeting I drove past another Norm's that had formerly been a Van de Kamps. It was a former cruise night spot in Norwalk about 10 yrs back, soon to be demo'd for another mini mall.
I told C' that I'd go easy once the Broiler was serving cars again Lol!
    Thanx All!.

Mickey actually resided in Alhambra (Graduated Alh High, was also pal with Burke-Think Pumkin Seed?)

This from his website chronicling his & Trudy's demise.

Mickey Thompson was born on December 7, 1928 in Alhambra, California (conflicting info here though=One says San Fernando on his official site). He became a legend as a driver, automotive engineer, and a drag racing champion.

I remember hearing that he had a shop there in El Monte as well as San Gabriel. I recieved and award from him in 1980-81 & 82

The Los Angeles Motor Car Dealers Sponsored Alhambra School Districts Automotive Achievement Awards Banquet held in the San Gabriel High School Cafeteria-still have the program.;)
Here is is in his high school years, I believe that it was AHS.

You're probably asking"What does this have to do with the Broiler?"

When he ran Lions, he used to stop in @ the Broiler for a bite of a Chubby Cheese Burger from Chubby the Champ.
Infact somebody told me a story of how they unloaded a digger @ ran it through the lot=:D. They were coming back from Lions.
