    Kevin,
Saw your write up in Street Rodder. People with your drive and character are few and far between. Thanks for giving your time to something that will benifit all of us. Look forward to cruising by in the future....

  3. I'm glad to see that this post is still alive!

Has anyone been down Firestone lately?

I picked this up today at the Glendale Toy and Advertising Show...a ****on with Big Boy. As I remember back, maybe in the 80's, there was some thought that they were going to eliminate the Big Boy figure as some were of the opinion that he was too chubby and therefore represented a poor image for the company, so these ****ons were p***ed out to provoke opinions and as a publicity stunt. I had forgotten all about this...it didn't seem to matter as Americans have turned into big tubs anyways...:)

I remember this stunt, They did it for their 50th anniversary, I have the gl***es that they gave you for .50c more when they brought your drink.
Pretty funny because 13 yrs later most locations would be gone.
I closed the Alhambra location with a big cruise that ran them out of food.
I can't believe that it's 13 yrs since then. It's now Noodle World with a Bob's statue in it.

Kevin: I always wondered why somebody didn't do something and now I realize, YOU ARE SOMEBODY!. Great work, Wish I could be there to re-live the good times.

  10. This is sorta off-topic but.....in January of '64 I visited a guy from my hometown that was living in Inglewood, CA. He was about a half block from Bruce's Racing Tires....where they made recap slicks for drag racing. He took me to a hotrod hangout called "the Witch Stand". Anybody ever hear of it and is it still in operation ??

It's still around and now called Simply Wholesome. It was in a state of disrepair some time back. It is now fixed back up and photo do***ented by Adriene Biondo and can be seen on roadsidepeek.com
It was also a part of our Holy Ghost Cruise for the Broiler Tour ll that left from George's Diner and a brief synopsis was given there as well as other old haunts.

    Ragtop35,
Thank you for that! That was a very cool compliment.:D

    Now that made me laugh!:D:D.

I mean when you went with your pal and cruised it.
Do tell HAMBers what it was like at the Drive In, Remember that one had a a very strange pull up and wait area.

  17. Sorry.....I can't remember any of the details. I'm amazed that I could even recall the name of the joint.

Got a call from Jim Louder. The JOHNIE"s signs are taken down lots of what one would expect in a sign that hadn't been lit for 8ys. Pigeons and Honey Bee's.
The sign I'd like to say on site. The sign company is directly across the street.
One is is now in their yard. The HARVEY'S is in the background on the stucco.
It was sureal to see that in person again.

I took Humbolt Cat and his Bride to check it out,He had been there with his late father in 1988. I gave em a tour, they have an idea of what is to come.

While attending the NHRA's Celebration of the Model 4O, I ran into Ken Gross who said "Thanks for saving HARVEY'S BROILER-you're famous!", I said "Oh no Ken, HARVEY'S is what is famous, I'm just helping"

I also ran into Thom Taylor, I tossed him an idea of collaboration. Some of you have said "Why don't you write a book about it?" In order to do it we'd need more than a regional market in order to circulate the finshed product. Would you guys or your friends be interested in having a book on the Broiler? If so let me know ok?

My dad used to take me and my brother there when we were kids. Sure I'd buy one. Lots of old photos from every decade and personal accounts of the place would be intresting. Plus how you go about saving something like this.

    Kev,

I think it would be great! I'd buy one!

Maybe if you tied in steps you took to save Harvey's. It could not only be a great looking book with history and photos, but a "how to" for future preservationist? Might also give it some broader appeal.

    Bellflower A&W.

Bellflower Blvd across from the Pontiac Dealer

Building was a Dairy, Liquor store, Site was recently for lease.
This Old Haunt was on Chili Phils Ghost Cruise to the Broiler on Feb 25, 2007
A&W Rootbeer was served @ this stop in remembrance.

Side Bar note: The Fat Boy character was taken down today and will be going to the sign shop for restoration. The JOHNIE'S signage will be going into private storage. Those will not be retained on the site.

Fat Boy will be up on his perch keeping an eye on things @ the drive way entrance when the Brolier opens and Big Boy will be where Fat Boy used the keep an eye on Firestone Bl.;)
