I recognize the building :D, Looked great!
I guess that Joe doesn't know what the HAMB is, He refers to it as The Jalopy Journal only, I guess that all these times that I brought it up at the Nordic Fox, or even Bob's when wanted to have the Sat nite cruise there, he wasn't paying attention ;).
That's where we spread the word of Hot Rodding!.

    Broiler Progress!

Just checked progress on the Broiler. It is coming along fine, The Car Canopy length is done and we will have a perfect cruise spot for Weds night or any other night that HAMBers may find doable.

The reason that I prefer Weds is because in the 80's a great deal of cars would hang there at the Harvey's Cruise Night and would grab grub at the snack bar. (I know that this now would prevent me from going over to Van Nuys if that became a weekly deal, but if it were to stay monthly, I'd sneak away to cruise a few laps ;) )Does this night work for y'all?

We are beginning to plan the Grand Opening Fund Raiser, There will be several of them. This 1st one will be an invitation only one - kind of along the line that we do our Outriders Picnic.(With that deal, we actually have participants pay for the invite and they come and have tri-tip grub see a great group of people and "kick tars" in a privately owned park away from the GP). We do the kind of the same thing with our PRC Reliability Run.

We feel that you guys/gals are all part of its resurection and would like to know who might want to be invited to join in on the Fund Raiser. (The proceeds would be going to either Make a Wish or City Of Hope,(we still need to confirm which one we'd like to benefit from this particular event). I'd like to show Jim that we are not the lawn chair type and that we do jump into action when called upon and will fill the canopy and the whole lot. Do you guys think that we can make that happen

    Let Adriene or I know,

    Thanks,
    CK

Only if you cook Chili! Phil, do you remember 30 months ago when we sat in Norm's and created the runs that became the Ghost Cruises. Well it is on it's way back! Drive by when you get a chance.

Kevin, I can see the progress and I'm real excited.

Of course, I'd be happy to whip up a Pot o' Hell.

Maybe we can add some accoustic music to the gathering too?

Seems it would be fun to do enough to put copy on every rod with open header that shows up:D:cool:

It was cool going down to the cruises, seeing and hanging with a lot of legends of customs back in the early ninties.
This was one of my favorites to go to.

I am ready to come cruise Bob's Broiler when it's up and running!

I was talking to Kirby Baldwin, he filmed our 2007 Ghost Cruisefrom his Mustang. He'll be over at Bob's in Toluca Lake on Fri., June 26th showing footage from the Ghost Cruise and the 2008 New Year's Eve Day Cruise. Look for his truck and t.v.!

Such a good, heartwarming story about what community can do when they set their minds and hearts to something. Cyclone Kev is a bulldog, never let the dream go.

I would like to say that part of this story is about how hard the small restaurant business is...so

PLEASE GO TO YOUR FAVORITE PLACES AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN...they need the money to keep going! Especially our beloved diners, drive-ins and Mom and Pops. The cost of business keeps going up, and these small places have to compete with the big guys. I've lost my share of cultural treasures, and this story is just inspiring. I'm off to my local diner for lunch...cheeseburger special, fries well done and a chocolate milkshake please!

How far is this from where the new and improved van nuys cruise is happening? I would love to make a trip from Idaho this fall and enjoy the cruise AND a burger at the broiler!! (hoping it would be open by september or so?)

I followed this post for a few days way back when it first started - right after the demo - and I have to say, I thought it was totally a lost cause - it was too late, it would never be put back right, and that you guys were wasting your breath.

I apologize for having so little faith in your tenaciousness.

It is great to see people who care about and protect history.

  19. Heart warming until they go after project cars, parts cars, welding and grinder noise, local race tracks, etc.

Well hopefully this diner won't have too much grinder noise and welding....

Sheesh.... Sometimes its OK to celebrate the victories that are sprinkled through life's journey. This is one of those moments.

I choose every morning to be on the winning and happy side of the fence.
Its worked for me for 58 years. Still winning and still happy.
Come out to California for the opening of the Broiler, I'll buy you dinner.
    I'm serious. :)

Thanks to Kevin, Andriene and all the others who never gave up. Also, thanks to Jim, the owner and the City of Downey for having the foresight to seize the opportunity.

FWIW, there is a huge difference between 2 pills every 4 hours and 4 pills every 2 hours...might want to read your bottles a little better:D

  24. Actually Iv'e been very happy for 68 yrs. I did have the township tell me to get rid of 2 48 ford trucks, or put them in a garage, turned down permit for garage due to being in a flood plane, then after putting up a 24 x 24 shed with wood floor and no foundation they tax me for a garage. When they finally get a township engineer to look at it, it's not a flood plane. So I'm not fond of politicians. Also I see many on here *****in about neighbors, local government regs, etc. but don't seem to mind when it happens to someone else, and worse, they are the cause. Just my observation.
I appreciate the offer for dinner, but probably will not get to California, I'm sure all concerned are very likable people, and would be friends with them, I just don't agree with this.:)

    Racingonerobb,
I guarantee that you would hate to live where I live, I have a Mill going on at any hour of the evening and sometimes a grinder and the shrill of a doming tool will just about take your ears out. On any given night I can be firinng up a loud 69 Camaro SS,34 Ford Roadster or uncorked flatty powered 34 3W. I have awesome neighbors and I try to ***ist them in any way that I can. That is key, I am not as friendly with the city, but own a house with a paved back yard and for the most part try and keep everything out of the viewing corridor. I can hear Irwindale Raceway from my house and it is several miles away and I totally enjoy it. Every heat is with me being right there. We fought very hard to get that track open and Mazooma can attest as to what it takes a city to listen as where he lives he can hear the track better than I.(he is also a former city councilman-mayor and total straight shooter)
The restaurant fight is for people like you, your kids and their kids. The land owner is a happy Fat Cat, Jim will be hopefully too-soon when it opens. I and many others will welcome it's re-existence in the car community that also supported us and fought so very hard for something that we hold so dearly to our hearts.
I'm sorry about what happened with your garage situation, perhaps a letter could be written to your building/planning dept explaining that you are a hobbiest, not doing business out of there and they can accept your garage for what it is. You don't even want to hear about the amount of hoops that we jumped/are jumping through in order to get a 1958 building back from the ground up.:D
Good luck and I hope that if you ever get out to So Cal, that you take Mazooma up on his offer.;)
