The Road Runner looks like a clean kit - ready to go. And hats off to the guy for putting it all together, really. Especially the manifold. But the cost is well over two grand, yes? (I honestly stopped paying attention when I saw the price had four numbers) So not the most bang for my buck. I'm putting a 4-71 together for much less, and it's going to look right on my car - something nothing else mentioned in this thread can really do.

Kevin: I was talking about the commercially available kits not the stuff the do it yourselfers are doing. Hell yes you can do it for less by shopping for parts. If a guy wants to spend money take a look at the Magnusun? It'll really break your wallet. I'm just saying that you will get your moneys worth with Joe Abbot and his Road Runner kit, plus very good tech help. Theres nothing wrong with the appearance of the Road Runner kit, It's just not as massive as some blowers.

  5. Just for reference it's Joe Abbin no Abbot.

Dave Tatom, flathead guru in Mt Vernon, WA <www.tatom.com> likes Whipples on flatheads a lot. Says that the lesser power drain, compared with a roots type, produces significantly more net BHP.

Personally, I think there's nothing cooler looking than a GMC-blown flattie.
Both of these are 3-71s, and I think FlatOz' 4-71 looks amazing.

Joe Abbin got 335HP out of his latest 276" blown engine using his kit.

    Probably boring though...

I've never done a Whipple, But I just finished my drive for a front mount 4/71

Dude I put my 4-71 deal together for approx USD $1700. That includes intake, snout, pulleys, belt, water pump spacers etc. The blower was a rebuilt 4-71 off a well known blower rebuilder who sells on Ebay and was in primo shape.

I made all the gaskets, the carb plate, the linkages, rebuilt the WW carbs and dialled them in myself to keep the costs down, nothing hard just took my time.

So if I can do it, so can anyone else. Remember im in Australia and have to add sales tax/duty to everything I bring in so it IS doable if you shop smart and know the right people.

    Rat

It can be done is you shop smart and know people. Im not saying Joe's kit(which is a great kit) is no good, it just wasnt for me becuase it was'nt period looking enough for my application.

  12. While we're postin blower pix, here is the setup with the WW carbs....

the roots type blower off the commer knocker engine are much harder to convert to gas, that ugly air catcher generally has to be machined off and the carbs need to be mounted on an angle to make it all work, not saying it cant be done, but its a hell of a lot of work and if you dont have a machine shop $$$.

I have a few mates who have them. I have seen them at swaps for about $300

  16. Man,

you blower guys are so touchy. I've re-read this thread and the dude didnt say blown flatheads are boring, just looking for something off centre!

i understood it... he said 4-71's were boring... but that isnt really the case.

"Assemly Required", plenty of that :)
my angle is that there are plenty of other areas to channel creative energy. sometimes being different "just because" isnt always the SMART path... work smarter, not harder.

  20. Hey,

4-71's are BORING! There must be at least 5 of them in Melbourne at the moment :)

all 4 of them? wow, you guys must have an over abundance of them in Australia... spoiled rotten the lot of you ;)

flathead youngin - yah, you can get the new scot's through H&H..but again, for a hefty price, i dont have the numbers on me though! ...

as an aside i dont think the originator of this post ever said he was building a traditional style hot rod. for performance, Tatom prefers whipples whereas plenty of GMC cased flatheads are running equal numbers.... again, he isnt building a race car... just a need for something different.

my point is? i have no fuckin idea... just rambling.

I was getting better at bracket racing! each race ? ran a 16.15 but, had to race two blown flatheads ? that where 2 to 2&1/2 seconds faster than me ! I have been wanting to go with a blower for years ! and am trying to figure the most eficent way To do it ? so blow me all the people that took this the wrong way ! casey.
