I remember reading in R&C years back about a guy who put a few inches back in the roof of a chopped model a pickup...

The best way to do it is with a doner roof. that way you have all the missing metal and most likely you can get the stock glass were you got the roof.

  4. i seen an ad in the classifieds maybe a year ago where someone was selling the tin from a chop on an A coupe , that alone would stand to reason someone has done this before ..

  5. A former roomie had a '34 Ford truck that had a hideous chop done on it! He wanted to un-chop it, but since it was a truck, it was far easier and cheaper to find another uncut cab. I never did see the finished product - he got transferred and took the project with him.

There is a copper color '51 Ford PU that is in the new Goodguy Gazette with the Pleasanton,CA coverage. Owner had a chopped top installed, after it was made into a convert. Also, had European style headlights removed from fenders and stock ones put in custom grill surround. More mods too.

Not back up to stock height, but I have seen a donor roof grafted on to fix an unfinished, poorly-done chop. Previous owner tried to do the car himself, botched it, and gave up. Doors weren't cut, and the roof / posts were just tacked.

Guy I knew bought the car for almost nothing and had a body guy raise it from about a 5" + hack with mail-slot windows back up to a much nicer 2 1/2 or 3" cut.

  9. I have the pieces to put about 4" back into a T coupe.

I bought them to RAISE a stock top a couple of inches.

I un-convertibled my Merc, it was gonna be a look-a-like-im a dropp top.
Thankfully the dude saved all the trimmings in a COORS box. That said; I built a stock roofline outa chunks, then made numerous cuts/welds/fix's to get the same heap...

In 1986 we unchopped the old Bushwacker AA/GS car. Del Rio went a little bit to far with the angle chop. You had to laydown in the car just to see the christmas tree. We still left about 1 1/2 of wedge. But that was a fiberglass car, it was easy. Used conduit glassed in to brace it!

I don't see the big deal get another roof, and doors, screw trying to fix the original roof!

Unchopping one is easy, try "unbodydropping" a late model crewcab dully.

    an angry drunk eh?

On the other quote of just get another roof, some of the cars that have been chopped its hard to find a donnor car for a roof, but for the work to make another one you are right it would be worth it even if you had to pay all the money to by another car/roof.

This is a HOT ROD forum not a antique restorer sight. I never thought the day would come to see this question on the H.A.M.B . I gaged a little when I read this. What's next? How would a 32 Ford Highboy look with tractor tires and mud flaps? NOW get out there and chop that sucker!

I can see it now, a 49 Merc with a roofline like a Telephone T. Raised rooflines will be touted as the "New Black."
