Only reason I would see to unchop is to fix a screw up, like was said above. Maybe some of the boys down in TX can put up a few pics of Jesse James Merc and you can see why.:D

With so many "just wrong" chops showing up lately I can see guys getting those cars on the cheap when the owners tire of them and rechopping or unchopping them.
You could visualize a thread on here from someone who was taking the Model A that Appleseed showed putting it on a set of 32 Rails as a highboy and taking the roof back up to a reasonable chop.

Guys from every area of the country could name one vehicle that was chopped wrong that has gone through several different owners and shows up for sale every year or so after the latest keeper discovers that no glass shop in the area will even talk about putting a windshield in it.
In the Yakima/Tri-cities area of Washington it was a 56 F-100 that got passed around for years. The only easy way to fix an otherwise decent project truck would have been to unchop it and start over.

  4. I may be doing just this to my '32 Tudor - bought it because it had a very wicked, approximate 6" chop, got it home and it's done very, very poorly - riveted panels inside, no structure, probably lots of bondo (I haven't been able to bring myself to checking just yet). I think I may simply raise it an inch in the back and get a little more slant, should help with the wicked factor. If I find I can't do it without too much trouble (read $$$) I may simply whack it right off and build it into a Tudor tub - I've already started assembling parts including roadster cowl pieces, etc. A 4 seat open car sounds fun anyhow . . .

I don't have any money or time to be chopping anything real so its off to the GIMP (linux photo editor). I've seen quite a few chops that the only way to make them better would be to go back to a new lid and start over. I have a moral of trying to not criticize unless I can offer a solution. kinda like anyone can find a splinter but who's gonna get it out? I'm sure most guys with shoddy work come to realize as I have that the job they did wasn't the best or even adequet for the situation like the time I stick welded in upper control arms from a 77 aspen into the unibody of a 71 dart for improved handling. I had the geometry correct but it was a case of "if you cant weld good weld alot". One more example of a totally feasible and worthwhile operation turnng to fail but you learn and move on. education is never free by any means.
I think all that stuff you save from chops has gotta be worth something even to use on another chop if not to put one back to stock. it's a whole different perspective on top chops when your 6' and taller you end up getting stuck in the thing trying to get out for like a hundred yeaars and they call you names like crumplestillskin or foldio. I had a 76 fiat spyder and couldnt drive it with the top up because with the seat all the way back I was still looking at the road from over the windshield. do whatever it takes to make the car fit you right

I've always wondered if someone has ever done that too. I guess that there really are some people who have.

That looks aweful! Such a waste of a nice car. Look at those exhaust manifolds! I would rather have a stock Model A sedan than that! If I was given that, I would unsection it a foot and a half, put an inch or two back in the roof, and actually hot rod it.

I unchopped my back window on my 33 coupe because whoever chopped it in the 50's misalligned one side of the window. Since I had a full height rear window, I enlarged it 1.5" than it was for better visability.

Nobody's talkin shit. We know there were a few "hurdles" to jump over while getting the roof of Your car right. and I think we are all in total agreement that the car for sure turned out "right."

easy there, big fella. this ain't that kind of party.

Exactly. How many of you have seen an early fifties Chevy that's been copped, but doesn't have glass, or moldings in it? There's a reason for that. Shitty work.

Because I chop tops, I get to see a lot of bad chops as well.

People asking me if I can fix them...

Crooked, more taken out of one side than the other, posts not lining up, warped sheetmetal with inches of overlap and pigeon shit welds, etc.

And of course, the second question is how much that would cost.

The standard answer is " how much did it cost to make this mess?
It will be more than that..."
