I bought it many years ago and took it apart then, now need to put it back together and lost all my notes about clearances. its a 4:86 R&P with Detroit locker carrier. 31 spline so cut off the tube ends and now have large 9" ends, bearings and axles. any help is greatly appreciated Rich
I've built a few. Carrier preload 60 in/lbs. (no seals) Pinion preload 20 in/lbs. (rotating new bearings, 10 in/lbs. used) Backlash .004"-.006" (no tight spots) I like the backlash even tighter, like .002". The one in my shop truck is right @ .000". Remember, all the housings are aluminum, almag or magnesium, They will expand at a much faster rate than the differential, giving more backlash.
Gearheads is right about the backlash, the aluminum grows as it heats up, so set em on the tight side. Frankland is still in bussiness in Pennsylvania and can get you the shim kits and set up bearings. They.also have a catalog with a great tech section that tells you everything you need to know about set up. Setting up a frankland is so easy, even i can do it. Good luck, -Abone.
Fair enough, and thank you for all the figures and tips I will be contacting them for the book for sure. I have had this for at least 15 years, and built the axle tubes 10 years ago.. I do mean it thank you Rich
