So we have had several guys say travel during the week and not on weekends but what about the time of year? Being mid October I have seen that Oregon has already had snow.

    Hello,
In So Cal, any time of the year is great driving weather. But, it is always advisable to drive on the weekdays. Well, what about weekend cruises? You will have to pick the times of the year, but we drove to Victoria, Canada from (So Cal) in late August after the summer travelers were back at their jobs and kids started school. Little to no traffic. But, every city or town has their traffic jam hours... Big Sur during early June is great because the summer driving season hasn't started yet. All along the north coast past San Francisco can be driven just about anytime, but those winter, northern storms play havoc on the winding coastal route. (We had to turn around near Sea Ranch because of the blinding rain and winds... very scary with the cliff and ocean right to the left.)
A great example for So Cal: driving from Seal Beach down to San Diego along the coast is a fun drive, but all of the beach cities are crowded due to ...great beach weather and the numerous festivals happening during the summer months. Laguna Beach during the week is a beautiful drive, but during the summer, it takes twice as long to get through the town as a normal weekday. The locals just hole up during the weekend until the tourists go home... This scenario is typical of most cities along the coast highway route.

Snow is virtually a non-issue in regards to driving along the west coast. The Pacific Ocean is by far and away the largest body of water anywhere on the planet, the ocean influences (creates) our weather, and the ocean water temperature simply does NOT ever get cold enough for it to snow near the beach. You'll need to get to higher elevations (inland) to be impacted by white stuff.
From early September through early November is ideal for road trips, in my opinion. Kids are in school, most tourists are gone, weather is typically perfection, and accommodations along the way are wide open. Your mileage may vary ...
I've driven the route, San Diego to Seattle (about fourteen hundred miles each way), with no heater, defroster, a/c, NO TOP, and didn't have any wipers either. Barely ever even saw a cloud in the sky. That was in mid May.

I guess if we ever make this happen it might be planned around the trip from Western South Dakota to either So-Cal Or Washington State.
