You can see it, so do it! Be the first and be the best. Isn't 62 the first year for the crinkled roof for the Impala? I can see that on the cab and it looks good. Please use and Impala 4door for the project.
Station wagon, done right from there, that would do it. Biggest trick I think would be the back of the top. I suggest The back of the roof and glass on the wagon as a good start for the rear of the top. 4 door wagon, the posts on the back of the rear doors mated with the posts on the front. You may want the doors from a 2-door car to use as doors for this project, 4 door fronts would look short.
Elkies had the wagon floorpan under the bed complete with footwells so converting a wagon is the way to go. I agree that the longer doors would be nicer. Maybe even making it a hardtop elkie using Impala two door doors and having new door glass cut and tempered to fit right. Getting the back of the roof to look right would be the biggest challenge as a lot of this style of conversion don't seem to show a lot of thought being put into that area.

That looks pretty cool, I think it would look better with a couple inches off the back, and a few off the front, but all in all it looks good eh?
Theres a guy in Garden Grove CA that has one he made into a crew cab I see it at a body shop every now n then...
I kinda dig that red one..I think the only thing i'd change had i built it would be to use a flat top style rear window out of, say, a 61 Belair post car.. I think the overhang at the rear of the roof would look slick with the long rear of the car and it would square up the rear of the door glass too.. Hmm...might have to try one of them someday
i got a 62 wagon and i thought about it too,i would use 2 door doors and a roof off a 61 2 door post car with the back glass so it has the over hang like the 59 and 60's had ,i think it would look more factory that way

My thing is I love the creased look of the Impala roof... the kinda '61 bubbley top doesn't really work for me. Also I agree a steep, flat glass type back window (like a true El Cam) might look cool. Still havin' a hard time piecing it together in my little pea-sized brain.
I think it would be a bit more like this, but you can consider a c10 pickup roof top or a corvair pickup top and windshield for the rear I would reference the 59-60 elcos and then go from there which make sense to 2dr a wagon then, make it an el camino. Forcing a bubble top on it is like giving it a double ass, and in this sort of execution you should try to make it a factory job. Here is quickie PS with a wagon rear window. You have to lengthen the door to 2door post size.
i think your rite on.it does need the over hang on the roof.with a very slim b-pillar. but then again we do think alot alike
I think one would either need to incorporate the D pillar and rear window from a wagon (similar to the 'chop above), or the pillar and window from a '59/60 El Camino. The '61 sedan roof would have too much overhang/window, and the '62+ sedan windows just quite don't look right (seen above). Definitely needs to have the longer 2dr doors.
If I remember correctly, I saw one at a Rod shop in the 80's in New Mexico that was being built. It was a 61 though, but was being built with a roof with the overhang, and it looked good.
I know my 1956 "El Camino" is a far cry from a '62 but what I did was to use a 4 door station wagon. I put in a back window from a 55 Ford wagon, connected the drip rail, welded up the doors, put in a tudor front seat, welded in the front 12 inches from a '57 Chev fender (they didn't rust out). I did it in the days of using lead (late '60s), sure took a lot of it. Never completed it, just drove the living daylights out of it. The picture is the only one I have of it, it was in a car lot, after I traded it even up for a Model A pickup in a basket. Nice thing about using a station wagon is the tailgate.
I photo shopped my old 63 Rambler to see what it's look like as a "Rambero' or a Rambelmino.....I loved the look. Choprods used a 62 top when he made an elcamino from his 58 chevy..wasn't too bad. I liked it.
Jeez, I can't believe I just started this same thread ! It so happens I HAVE a '62 Impala 4 door hardtop with (newly) wrinked passenger side doors, and the El Camino idea popped up. I think it'd be the coolest car in the trailer park...
This would work for me. My first car was a 68 and the only other I would get would be either a 66 or 67. They have the best rear window look.
Guys have been cutting up sedans to make trucks since day one. Some really nice cars were cut up during wars. Mostly on farms. My boss cut up a '62 Imp wagon on his farm back in 1970.
