Yes, I have made my own Hats(rotors)however they were solid rotors and not sandwich finned(for cooling). I used them on a light car for the street. They did get hot if I did do alot of heavy braking. If I were to do it again I would go with a 1/2" thick rotor and drill a pattern if 1/4" holes for cooling.
i have looked into it but the cost of materials and special machine work make them cost more then buying them
Why, there's about 1,000 difference options already available for close to scrap at a salvage yard to $$$ racing stuff? Also, drilling holes in the rotors does not actually help them cool faster. A tech at Wilwood told me that. He said they use to think that, but now that's not the case and that the solid metal ones actually perform better, but of course using the sandwich finned ones. Maybe different for just solid metal. He said they still offer the drilled ones because they have too many clients who are still convinced the drilled ones either perform better or at least look like they should perform better which is the real concern anyway. This was just before he also told me they didn't have any discs strong enough for my 1-ton truck project and they would not sell me anything and also warned me not to try to use any of their stuff on my project for liability reasons or they would possibly sue me if there was ever a problem or they found out. So, I got some other stuff from Baer. I can't imagine you could make one better and/or cheaper than and typ. sandwich finned one. And if you don't care that much about better performance, why not just stick to the drums since I am guessing this is for a traditional car?
